36 – Parashat Chuqqah (חֻקַּ֣ת) – “Ordinance” – November 30th thru December 6th

Bemidbar (Numbers) 19:1 – 22:1

Bemidbar (Numbers) 19

  1. And Yahuah spake unto El-Mosheh and unto El-Aharon, saying,
  2. This is the ordinance of the Torah which Yahuah hath commanded, saying, Speak unto the children of Yashar’el, that they bring thee a red heifer without spot, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke:
  3. And ye shall give her unto El’azar the priest, that he may bring her forth without the camp, and one shall slay her before his face:
  4. And El’azar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her blood directly before the tabernacle of the assembly seven times:
  5. And one shall burn the heifer in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall he burn:
  6. And the priest shall take cedar wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer.
  7. Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the even.
  8. And he that burneth her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even.
  9. And a man that is clean shall gather up את the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the assembly of the children of Yashar’el for a water of separation: it is a purification for sin.
  10. And he that gathereth the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: and it shall be unto the children of Yashar’el, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among them, for a statute for ever.
  11. He that toucheth the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days.
  12. He shall purify himself with it on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean: but if he purify not himself the third day, then the seventh day he shall not be clean.
  13. Whosoever toucheth the dead body of any man that is dead, and purifieth not himself, defileth the tabernacle of Yahuah; and that soul shall be cut off from Yashar’el: because the water of separation was not sprinkled upon him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him.
  14. This is the Torah, when a man dieth in a tent: all that come into the tent, and all that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.
  15. And every open vessel, which hath no covering bound upon it, is unclean.
  16. And whosoever toucheth one that is slain with a sword in the open fields, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.
  17. And for an unclean person they shall take of the ashes of the burnt heifer of purification for sin, and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel:
  18. And a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the persons that were there, and upon him that touched a bone, or one slain, or one dead, or a grave:
  19. And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day: and on the seventh day he shall purify himself, and wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even.
  20. But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from among the assembly, because he hath defiled the sanctuary of Yahuah: the water of separation hath not been sprinkled upon him; he is unclean.
  21. And it shall be a perpetual statute unto them, that he that sprinkleth the water of separation shall wash his clothes; and he that toucheth the water of separation shall be unclean until even.
  22. And whatsoever the unclean person toucheth shall be unclean; and the soul that toucheth it shall be unclean until even.

Bemidbar (Numbers) 20

  1. Then came the children of Yashar’el, even the whole assembly, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Qadesh; and Miryam died there, and was buried there.
  2. And there was no water for the assembly: and they gathered themselves together against Mosheh and against Aharon.
  3. And the people chode with Mosheh, and spake, saying, Would Elohiym that we had died when our brethren died before Yahuah!
  4. And why have ye brought up the assembly of Yahuah into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?
  5. And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Mitsrayim, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.
  6. And Mosheh and Aharon went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the assembly, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of Yahuah appeared unto them.
  7. And Yahuah spake unto El-Mosheh, saying,
  8. Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aharon thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the assembly and their beasts drink.
  9. And Mosheh took the rod from before Yahuah, as He commanded him.
  10. And Mosheh and Aharon gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?
  11. And Mosheh lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the assembly drank, and their beasts also.
  12. And Yahuah spake unto El-Mosheh and El-Aharon, Because ye believed Me not, to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Yashar’el, therefore ye shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.
  13. This is the water of Meriyvah; because the children of Yashar’el strove with Yahuah, and He was sanctified in them.
  14. And Mosheh sent messengers from Qadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Yashar’el, Thou knowest את all the travail that hath befallen us:
  15. How our fathers went down into Mitsrayim, and we have dwelt in Mitsrayim a long time; and the Mitsriym vexed us, and our fathers:
  16. And when we cried unto El-Yahuah, He heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Mitsrayim: and, behold, we are in Qadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border:
  17. Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king’s high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.
  18. And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.
  19. And the children of Yashar’el said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing anything else, go through on my feet.
  20. And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
  21. Thus Edom refused to give Yashar’el passage through his border: wherefore Yashar’el turned away from him.
  22. And the children of Yashar’el, even the whole assembly, journeyed from Qadesh, and came unto Mount Hor.
  23. And Yahuah spake unto El-Mosheh and El-Aharon in Mount Hor, by the coast of the land of Edom, saying,
  24. Aharon shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Yashar’el, because ye rebelled against My Word at the water of Meriyvah.
  25. Take Aharon and El’azar his son, and bring them up unto Mount Hor:
  26. And strip Aharon of his garments, and put them upon El’azar his son: and Aharon shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.
  27. And Mosheh did as Yahuah commanded: and they went up into Mount Hor in the sight of all the assembly.
  28. And Mosheh stripped Aharon of his garments, and put them upon El’azar his son; and Aharon died there in the top of the mount: and Mosheh and El’azar came down from the mount.
  29. And when all the assembly saw that Aharon was dead, they mourned for Aharon thirty days, even all the house of Yashar’el.

Bemidbar (Numbers) 21

  1. And when king Arad the Kena’aniy, which dwelt in the south, heard tell that Yashar’el came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Yashar’el, and took some of them prisoners.
  2. And Yashar’el vowed a vow unto Yahuah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.
  3. And Yahuah hearkened to the voice of Yashar’el, and delivered up the Kena’aniym; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and He called the name of the place Hormah.
  4. And they journeyed from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.
  5. And the people spake against Elohiym, and against Mosheh, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Mitsrayim to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.
  6. And Yahuah sent את fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Yashar’el died.
  7. Therefore the people came to Mosheh, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against Yahuah, and against thee; pray unto Yahuah, that He take away the serpents from us. And Mosheh prayed for the people.
  8. And Yahuah said unto Mosheh, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, את shall live.
  9. And Mosheh made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.
  10. And the children of Yashar’el set forward, and pitched in Ovoth.
  11. And they journeyed from Ovoth, and pitched at Ijeavariym, in the wilderness which is before Mo’av, toward the sunrising.
  12. From thence they removed, and pitched in the valley of Zared.
  13. From thence they removed, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness that cometh out of the coasts of the Emoriym: for Arnon is the border of Mo’av, between Mo’av and the Emoriym.
  14. Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of Yahuah, What He did in the Red Sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,
  15. And at the stream of the brooks that goeth down to the dwelling of Ar, and lieth upon the border of Mo’av.
  16. And from thence they went to Be’er: that is the well whereof Yahuah spake unto Mosheh, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.
  17. Then Yashar’el sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:
  18. The princes digged the well, the nobles of the people digged it, by the direction of the Torah giver, with their staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah:
  19. And from Mattanah to Nachaliy’el: and from Nachaliy’el to Bamoth:
  20. And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the country of Mo’av, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh toward Yeshiymon.
  21. And Yashar’el sent messengers unto Siychon king of the Emoriym, saying,
  22. Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink of the waters of the well: but we will go along by the king’s high way, until we be past thy borders.
  23. And Siychon would not suffer Yashar’el to pass through his border: but Siychon gathered all his people together, and went out against Yashar’el into the wilderness: and he came to Yahaz, and fought against Yashar’el.
  24. And Yashar’el smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon unto Yabboq, even unto the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.
  25. And Yashar’el took all these cities: and Yashar’el dwelt in all the cities of the Emoriym, in Cheshbon, and in all the villages thereof.
  26. For Cheshbon was the city of Siychon the king of the Emoriym, who had fought against the former king of Mo’av, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto Arnon.
  27. Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come into Cheshbon, let the city of Siychon be built and prepared:
  28. For there is a fire gone out of Cheshbon, a flame from the city of Siychon: it hath consumed Ar of Mo’av, and the Ba’aley of the high places of Arnon.
  29. Woe to thee, Mo’av! thou art undone, O people of Kemosh: he hath given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity unto Siychon king of the Emoriym.
  30. We have shot at them; Cheshbon is perished even unto Diyvon, and we have laid them waste even unto Nophach, which reacheth unto Meydeva.
  31. Thus Yashar’el dwelt in the land of the Emoriym.
  32. And Mosheh sent to spy out Ya’azer, and they took the villages thereof, and drove out the Emoriym that were there.
  33. And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edre’iy.
  34. And Yahuah said unto Mosheh, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Siychon king of the Emoriym, which dwelt at Cheshbon.
  35. So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.

Bemidbar (Numbers) 22

  1. And the children of Yashar’el set forward, and pitched in the plains of Mo’av on this side Yardan by Yericho.

Haftarah Chuqqah (חֻקַּ֣ת) – “Ordinance”

Shofetiym (Judges) 11:1-40

  1. Now Yiphtach the Gil’adiy was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gil’ad begat Yiphtach.
  2. And Gil’ad’s wife bare him sons; and his wife’s sons grew up, and they thrust out Yiphtach, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.
  3. Then Yiphtach fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tov: and there were gathered vain men to Yiphtach, and went out with him.
  4. And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Yashar’el.
  5. And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Yashar’el, the elders of Gil’ad went to fetch Yiphtach out of the land of Tov:
  6. And they said unto Yiphtach, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.
  7. And Yiphtach said unto the elders of Gil’ad, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?
  8. And the elders of Gil’ad said unto Yiphtach, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gil’ad.
  9. And Yiphtach said unto the elders of Gil’ad, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and Yahuah deliver them before me, shall I be your head?
  10. And the elders of Gil’ad said unto Yiphtach, Yahuah be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.
  11. Then Yiphtach went with the elders of Gil’ad, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Yiphtach uttered all his words before Yahuah in Mizpeh.
  12. And Yiphtach sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?
  13. And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Yiphtach, Because Yashar’el took away my land, when they came up out of Mitsrayim, from Arnon even unto Yabboq, and unto Yardan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.
  14. And Yiphtach sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon:
  15. And said unto him, Thus saith Yiphtach, Yashar’el took not away the land of Mo’av, nor the land of the children of Ammon:
  16. But when Yashar’el came up from Mitsrayim, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Qadesh;
  17. Then Yashar’el sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Mo’av: but he would not consent: and Yashar’el abode in Qadesh.
  18. Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Mo’av, and came by the east side of the land of Mo’av, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Mo’av: for Arnon was the border of Mo’av.
  19. And Yashar’el sent messengers unto Siychon king of the Emoriym, the king of Cheshbon; and Yashar’el said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.
  20. But Siychon trusted not Yashar’el to pass through his coast: but Siychon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Yahaz, and fought against Yashar’el.
  21. And Yahuah Elohai of Yashar’el delivered Siychon and all his people into the hand of Yashar’el, and they smote them: so Yashar’el possessed all the land of the Emoriym, the inhabitants of that country.
  22. And they possessed all the coasts of the Emoriym, from Arnon even unto Yabboq, and from the wilderness even unto Yardan.
  23. So now Yahuah Elohai of Yashar’el hath dispossessed the Emoriym from before His people Yashar’el, and shouldest thou possess it?
  24. Wilt not thou possess that which Kemosh thy elohiym giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever Yahuah Elohaynu shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.
  25. And now art thou any thing better than Balaq the son of Zippor, king of Mo’av? did he ever strive against Yashar’el, or did he ever fight against them,
  26. While Yashar’el dwelt in Cheshbon and her towns, and in Aro’er and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?
  27. Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: Yahuah the Judge be judge this day between the children of Yashar’el and the children of Ammon.
  28. Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Yiphtach which he sent him.
  29. Then the Ruach of Yahuah came upon Yiphtach, and he passed over Gil’ad, and Menashsheh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gil’ad, and from Mizpeh of Gil’ad he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
  30. And Yiphtach vowed a vow unto Yahuah, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,
  31. Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be Yahuah’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
  32. So Yiphtach passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Yahuah delivered them into his hands.
  33. And he smote them from Aro’er, even till thou come to Minniyth, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Yashar’el.
  34. And Yiphtach came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
  35. And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto Yahuah, and I cannot go back.
  36. And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto Yahuah, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as Yahuah hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.
  37. And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.
  38. And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.
  39. And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Yashar’el,
  40. That the daughters of Yashar’el went yearly to lament the daughter of Yiphtach the Gil’adiy four days in a year.

Brit Ha’dasha Chuqqah (חֻקַּ֣ת) – “Ordinance”

Yochanon (John) 3:10-21 & Ivriym (Hebrews) 9:11-28

Yochanon (John) 3:10-21

  • 10. Yahusha answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Yashar’el, and knowest not these things?
  • 11. Amein, amein, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
  • 12. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
  • 13. And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but He that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
  • 14. And as Mosheh lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
  • 15. That whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.
  • 16. For Elohiym so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
  • 17. For Elohiym sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.
  • 18. He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of Elohiym.
  • 19. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
  • 20. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
  • 21. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in Elohiym.

Ivriym (Hebrews) 9:11-28

  • 10. Which stood only in foods and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.
  • 11. But Mashiach being come an High Priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
  • 12. Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood he entered in once into the set-apart place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
  • 13. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
  • 14. How much more shall the blood of Mashiach, who through the eternal Ruach offered himself without spot to Elohiym, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living Elohiym?
  • 15. And for this cause He is the mediator of the renewed covenant, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
  • 16. For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
  • 17. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
  • 18. Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.
  • 19. For when Mosheh had spoken every precept to all the people according to the Torah, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,
  • 20. Saying, This is the blood of the covenant which Elohiym hath enjoined unto you.
  • 21. Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.
  • 22. And almost all things are by the Torah purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
  • 23. It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
  • 24. For Mashiach is not entered into the set-apart places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of Elohiym for us:
  • 25. Nor yet that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest entereth into the set-apart place every year with blood of others;
  • 26. For then must He often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath He appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
  • 27. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
  • 28. So Mashiach was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
