40 – Parashat Ha’Devariym (הַדְּבָרִ֗ים) – “The Words” – December 28th thru January 3rd

Devariym (Deuteronomy) 1:1 – 3:22

Devariym (Deuteronomy) 1

  1. These be the words which Mosheh spake unto all Yashar’el on this side Yardan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red Sea, between Par’an, and Tophel, and Lavan, and Chatseroth, and Dizy Zahav.
  2. (There are eleven days’ journey from Chorev by the way of Mount Se’iyr unto Qadesh Barnea.)
  3. And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Mosheh spake unto the children of Yashar’el, according unto all that Yahuah had given him in commandment unto them;
  4. After he had slain את Siychon the king of the Emoriym, which dwelt in Cheshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edre’iy:
  5. On this side Yardan, in the land of Mo’av, began Mosheh to declare this law, saying,
  6. Yahuah Elohaynu spake unto us in Chorev, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount:
  7. Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Emoriym, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.
  8. Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which Yahuah sware unto your fathers, Avraham, Yitschaq, and Ya’aqov, to give unto them and to their seed after them.
  9. And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone:
  10. Yahuah Elohaykem hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.
  11. (Yahuah Elohai of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as He hath promised you!)
  12. How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?
  13. Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.
  14. And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do.
  15. So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.
  16. And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.
  17. Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is Elohiym’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.
  18. And I commanded you at that time את all the things which ye should do.
  19. And when we departed from Chorev, we went through את all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Emoriym, as Yahuah Elohaynu commanded us; and we came to Qadesh Barnea.
  20. And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Emoriym, which Yahuah Elohaynu doth give unto us.
  21. Behold, Yahuah Elohayka hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as Yahuah Elohai of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.
  22. And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and את into what cities we shall come.
  23. And the saying pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe:
  24. And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshkol, and searched it out.
  25. And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which Yahuah Elohaynu doth give us.
  26. Notwithstanding ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of Yahuah Elohayka:
  27. And ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because Yahuah hated us, He hath brought us forth out of the land of Mitsrayim, to deliver us into the hand of the Emoriym, to destroy us.
  28. Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anaqiym there.
  29. Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.
  30. Yahuah Elohaykem which goeth before you, He shall fight for you, according to all that He did for you in Mitsrayim before your eyes;
  31. And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that Yahuah Elohaykem bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.
  32. Yet in this thing ye did not believe Yahuah Elohaykem,
  33. Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day.
  34. And Yahuah heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying,
  35. Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers.
  36. Save Kalev the son of Yephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed Yahuah.
  37. Also Yahuah was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither.
  38. But Yahusha the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Yashar’el to inherit it.
  39. Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.
  40. But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.
  41. Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against Yahuah, we will go up and fight, according to all that Yahuah Elohaynu commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.
  42. And Yahuah said unto me, Say unto them. Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.
  43. So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of Yahuah, and went presumptuously up into the hill.
  44. And the Emoriym, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Se’iyr, even unto Chormah.
  45. And ye returned and wept before Yahuah; but Yahuah would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.
  46. So ye abode in Qadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.

Devariym (Deuteronomy) 2

  1. Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea, as Yahuah spake unto me: and we compassed Mount Se’iyr many days.
  2. And Yahuah spake unto me, saying,
  3. Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.
  4. And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Se’iyr; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:
  5. Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given Mount Se’iyr unto Esau for a possession.
  6. Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.
  7. For Yahuah Elohayka hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: He knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years Yahuah Elohayka hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
  8. And when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, which dwelt in Se’iyr, through the way of the plain from Eylath, and from Etsyon Gever, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Mo’av.
  9. And Yahuah said unto me, Distress not the Mo’aviym, neither contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.
  10. The Eymiym dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anaqiym;
  11. Which also were accounted repha’iym, as the Anaqiym; but the Mo’aviym called them Eymiym.
  12. The Choriym also dwelt in Se’iyr beforetime; but the children of Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Yashar’el did unto the land of his possession, which Yahuah gave unto them.
  13. Now rise up, said I, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered.
  14. And the space in which we came from Qadesh Barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as Yahuah sware unto them.
  15. For indeed the hand of Yahuah was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.
  16. So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,
  17. That Yahuah spake unto me, saying,
  18. Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Mo’av, this day:
  19. And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.
  20. (That also was accounted a land of repha’iym: repha’iym dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammoniym call them Zamzummiym;
  21. A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anaqiym; but Yahuah destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:
  22. As He did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Se’iyr, when He destroyed the Choriym from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:
  23. And the Aviym which dwelt in Chatseriym, even unto Gaza, the Kaphtoriym, which came forth out of Kaphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)
  24. Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Siychon the Emoriy, king of Cheshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.
  25. This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.
  26. And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Qedemoth unto Siychon king of Cheshbon with words of peace, saying,
  27. Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.
  28. Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;
  29. (As the children of Esau which dwell in Se’iyr, and the Mo’aviym which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Yardan into the land which Yahuah Elohaynu giveth us.
  30. But Siychon king of Cheshbon would not let us pass by him: for Yahuah Elohayka hardened his ruach, and made his heart obstinate, that He might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.
  31. And Yahuah said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Siychon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.
  32. Then Siychon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Yahts.
  33. And Yahuah Elohaynu delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.
  34. And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:
  35. Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.
  36. From Aro’er, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gil’ad, there was not one city too strong for us: Yahuah Elohaynu delivered all unto us:
  37. Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Yabboq, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever Yahuah Elohaynu forbad us.

Devariym (Deuteronomy) 3:1-22

  1. Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edre’iy.
  2. And Yahuah said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Siychon king of the Emoriym, which dwelt at Cheshbon.
  3. So Yahuah Elohaynu delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining.
  4. And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argov, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
  5. All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many.
  6. And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Siychon king of Cheshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city.
  7. But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves.
  8. And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Emoriym the land that was on this side Yardan, from the river of Arnon unto Mount Chermon;
  9. (Which Chermon the Tsiydoniym call Siryon; and the Emoriym call it Sheniyr;)
  10. All the cities of the plain, and all Gil’ad, and all Bashan, unto Salkah and Edre’iy, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
  11. For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of repha’iym; behold his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.
  12. And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aro’er, which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gil’ad, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Re’uveniym and to the Gadiym.
  13. And the rest of Gil’ad, and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Menashsheh; all the region of Argov, with all Bashan, which was called the land of repha’iym.
  14. Ya’iyr the son of Menashsheh took all the country of Argov unto the coasts of Geshuriy and Ma’akathiy; and called them after his own name, Bashan Chavvoth Ya’iyr, unto this day.
  15. And I gave Gil’ad unto Makiyr.
  16. And unto the Re’uveniym and unto the Gadiym I gave from Gil’ad even unto the river Arnon half the valley, and the border even unto the river Yabboq, which is the border of the children of Ammon;
  17. The plain also, and Yardan, and the coast thereof, from Kinnereth even unto the sea of the plain, even the Salt Sea, under Ashdoth Hap’Pisgah eastward.
  18. And I commanded you at that time, saying, Yahuah Elohaykem hath given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Yashar’el, all that are meet for the war.
  19. But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle, (for I know that ye have much cattle,) shall abide in your cities which I have given you;
  20. Until Yahuah have given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you, and until they also possess the land which Yahuah Elohaykem hath given them beyond Yardan: and then shall ye return every man unto his possession, which I have given you.
  21. And I commanded Yahusha at that time, saying, Thine eyes have seen all that Yahuah Elohaykem hath done unto these two kings: so shall Yahuah do unto all the kingdoms whither thou passest.
  22. Ye shall not fear them: for Yahuah Elohaykem He shall fight for you.

Haftarah Ha’Devariym (הַדְּבָרִ֗ים) – “The Words”

Yechezq’el (Ezekiel) 20:1-44

  1. And it came to pass in the seventh year, in the fifth month, the tenth day of the month, that certain of the elders of Yashar’el came to enquire of Yahuah, and sat before me.
  2. Then came the Word of Yahuah unto me, saying,
  3. Son of A’dam, speak unto the elders of Yashar’el, and say unto them, Thus saith Adonai Yahuah; Are ye come to enquire of Me? As I live, saith Adonai Yahuah, I will not be enquired of by you.
  4. Wilt thou judge them, Son of A’dam, wilt thou judge them? cause them to know the abominations of their fathers:
  5. And say unto them, Thus saith Adonai Yahuah; In the day when I chose Yashar’el, and lifted up Mine hand unto the seed of the house of Ya’aqov, and made Myself known unto them in the land of Mitsrayim, when I lifted up Mine hand unto them, saying, I am Yahuah Elohaykem;
  6. In the day that I lifted up Mine hand unto them, to bring them forth of the land of Mitsrayim into a land that I had espied for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands:
  7. Then said I unto them, Cast ye away every man the abominations of his eyes, and defile not yourselves with the idols of Mitsrayim: I am Yahuah Elohaykem.
  8. But they rebelled against Me, and would not hearken unto Me: they did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Mitsrayim: then I said, I will pour out My fury upon them, to accomplish My anger against them in the midst of the land of Mitsrayim.
  9. But I wrought for My name’s sake, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, among whom they were, in whose sight I made Myself known unto them, in bringing them forth out of the land of Mitsrayim.
  10. Wherefore I caused them to go forth out of the land of Mitsrayim, and brought them into the wilderness.
  11. And I gave them My statutes, and shewed them My judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them.
  12. Moreover also I gave them My Shabbaths, to be a sign between Me and them, that they might know that I am Yahuah that sanctify them.
  13. But the house of Yashar’el rebelled against Me in the wilderness: they walked not in My statutes, and they despised My judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; and my Shabbaths they greatly polluted: then I said, I would pour out My fury upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.
  14. But I wrought for My name’s sake, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, in whose sight I brought them out.
  15. Yet also I lifted up My hand unto them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands;
  16. Because they despised My judgments, and walked not in My statutes, but polluted my Shabbaths: for their heart went after their idols.
  17. Nevertheless Mine eye spared them from destroying them, neither did I make an end of them in the wilderness.
  18. But I said unto their children in the wilderness, Walk ye not in the statutes of your fathers, neither observe their judgments, nor defile yourselves with their idols:
  19. I am Yahuah Elohaykem; walk in My statutes, and keep My judgments, and do them;
  20. And hallow My Shabbaths; and they shall be a sign between Me and you, that ye may know that I am Yahuah Elohaykem.
  21. Notwithstanding the children rebelled against Me: they walked not in My statutes, neither kept My judgments to do them, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; they polluted My Shabbaths: then I said, I would pour out My fury upon them, to accomplish My anger against them in the wilderness.
  22. Nevertheless I withdrew Mine hand, and wrought for My name’s sake, that it should not be polluted in the sight of the heathen, in whose sight I brought them forth.
  23. I lifted up Mine hand unto them also in the wilderness, that I would scatter them among the heathen, and disperse them through the countries;
  24. Because they had not executed My judgments, but had despised My statutes, and had polluted My Shabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers’ idols.
  25. Wherefore I gave them also statutes that were not good, and judgments whereby they should not live;
  26. And I polluted them in their own gifts, in that they caused to pass through the fire all that openeth the womb, that I might make them desolate, to the end that they might know that I am Yahuah.
  27. Therefore, Son of A’dam, speak unto the house of Yashar’el, and say unto them, Thus saith Adonai Yahuah; Yet in this your fathers have blasphemed Me, in that they have committed a trespass against Me.
  28. For when I had brought them into the land, for the which I lifted up Mine hand to give it to them, then they saw every high hill, and all the thick trees, and they offered there their sacrifices, and there they presented the provocation of their offering: there also they made their sweet savour, and poured out there their drink offerings.
  29. Then I said unto them, What is the high place whereunto ye go? And the name whereof is called Bamah unto this day.
  30. Wherefore say unto the house of Yashar’el, Thus saith Adonai Yahuah; Are ye polluted after the manner of your fathers? and commit ye whoredom after their abominations?
  31. For when ye offer your gifts, when ye make your sons to pass through the fire, ye pollute yourselves with all your idols, even unto this day: and shall I be enquired of by you, O house of Yashar’el? As I live, saith Adonai Yahuah, I will not be enquired of by you.
  32. And that which cometh into your mind shall not be at all, that ye say, We will be as the heathen, as the families of the countries, to serve wood and stone.
  33. As I live, saith Adonai Yahuah, surely with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out, will I rule over you:
  34. And I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out.
  35. And I will bring you into the wilderness of the people, and there will I plead with you face to face.
  36. Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Mitsrayim, so will I plead with you, saith Adonai Yahuah.
  37. And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant:
  38. And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against Me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Yashar’el: and ye shall know that I am Yahuah.
  39. As for you, O house of Yashar’el, thus saith Adonai Yahuah; Go ye, serve ye every one his idols, and hereafter also, if ye will not hearken unto Me: but pollute ye My set-apart name no more with your gifts, and with your idols.
  40. For in Mine set-apart mountain, in the mountain of the height of Yashar’el, saith Adonai Yahuah, there shall all the house of Yashar’el, all of them in the land, serve Me: there will I accept them, and there will I require your offerings, and the firstfruits of your oblations, with all your set-apart things.
  41. I will accept you with your sweet savour, when I bring you out from the people, and gather you out of the countries wherein ye have been scattered; and I will be sanctified in you before the heathen.
  42. And ye shall know that I am Yahuah, when I shall bring you into the land of Yashar’el, into the country for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to your fathers.
  43. And there shall ye remember your ways, an את all your doings, wherein ye have been defiled; and ye shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for all your evils that ye have committed.
  44. And ye shall know that I am Yahuah when I have wrought with you for My name’s sake, not according to your wicked ways, nor according to your corrupt doings, O ye house of Yashar’el, saith Adonai Yahuah.

Brit Ha’dasha Ha’Devariym (הַדְּבָרִ֗ים) – “The Words”

Ma’asiym (Acts) 7:36-42 & Ivriym (Hebrews) 3:7-19

Ma’asiym (Acts) 7:36-42

  • 36. He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Mitsrayim, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
  • 37. This is that Mosheh, which said unto the children of Yashar’el, A prophet shall Yahuah Elohaykem raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.
  • 38. This is he, that was in the called-out assembly in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the Mount Sinai, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:
  • 39. To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Mitsrayim,
  • 40. Saying unto Aharon, Make us elohiym to go before us: for as for this Mosheh, which brought us out of the land of Mitsrayim, we wot not what is become of him.
  • 41. And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
  • 42. Then Elohiym turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Yashar’el, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

Ivriym (Hebrews) 3:7-19

  • 7. Wherefore (as the Ruach Ha’Qodesh saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
  • 8. Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
  • 9. When your fathers tempted Me, proved Me, and saw My works forty years.
  • 10. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known My ways.
  • 11. So I sware in My wrath, They shall not enter into My rest.)
  • 12. Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living Elohiym.
  • 13. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
  • 14. For we are made partakers of Mashiach, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;
  • 15. While it is said, To day if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
  • 16. For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Mitsrayim by Mosheh.
  • 17. But with whom was He grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?
  • 18. And to whom sware He that they should not enter into His rest, but to them that believed not?
  • 19. So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
