6thday (Friday) – Bere’shiyth (Genesis) 27:30 – 28:9 – Esau returns from his hunting right after Yitschaq finishes blessing Ya’aqov; Esau brings his savoury meat and tells Yitschaq to eat his meat so Yitschaq can bless his soul; Yitschaq tells him that his brother Ya’aqov deceived him and stole his blessing and that he will surely be blessed; Esau now begs for his blessing after despising his birthright; Yitschaq gives a lower blessing to Esau and pronounces that he shall serve his brother; Esau hated אֶת Ya’aqov because of the blessing; Rivqah tells Yitschaq that she is afraid that Ya’aqov will break covenant with Yahuah by marrying a daughter of the land of Kena’an; Yitschaq calls Ya’aqov to him, blesses him and charges him to not take a wife of the daughters of Kena’an; Yitschaq then commands Ya’aqov to go marry his cousin, one of the daughters of Lavan, Rivqah’s brother; Yitschaq then tells Ya’aqov that El Shaddai will bless him, make him fruitful and multiply him to be a multitude of people, and give him the blessings of אֶת the blessing of Avraham; Yitschaq sends Ya’aqov to Lavan in Paddan Aram and he obeyed his father and his mother; The Torah portion ends with Esau trying to gain favor and make amends with his parents by marrying his cousin, Yishma’el’s daughter.
Main Themes & Commandments
The Birthright Versus Covenant Inheritance
The covenant of Yahuah is not passed according to the flesh birthright or man’s customs and traditions, but through His appointed purpose, through those who guard covenant with Him and it must be valued, guarded, and not despised or He will despise those that despise Him.
Bere’shiyth (Genesis) 25:31-34 – “And Ya’aqov said, Sell me this day אֶת thy birthright. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? And Ya’aqov said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold אֶת his birthright unto Ya’aqov. Then Ya’aqov gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his אֶת birthright.”
Mal’akiy (Malachi) 1:2-3 – “I have loved you, saith Yahuah. Yet ye say, Wherein hast Thou loved us? Was not Esau Ya’aqov’s brother? saith Yahuah: yet I loved Ya’aqov, And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the jackals of the wilderness.”
Romaiym (Romans) 9:11-13 – “(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of Elohiym according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. As it is written, Ya’aqov have I loved, but Esau have I hated.”
**The covenant with of Yahuah is passed to those who will guard His Torah as Avraham, Yitschaq and Ya’aqov did and those who despise His Word shall be hated by Yahuah even if they are the seed of one of the patriarchs of the faith. Yitschaq, Ya’aqov and most scholars say Avraham were not the eldest sons and the birthright, according to the law and tradition of men at the time, was not supposed to go to them. The eternal covenant of Yahuah is passed to those who obey His voice and guard His Torah and it must never be treated as something of little value, for it represents the promise of Yahuah’s yeshu’a (salvation) that is fulfilled through His Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach.
Obedience to the Eternal Torah Establishes Compliance with the Eternal Covenant
The covenant of Yahuah is confirmed and continued through obedience to His voice, guarding His charge, His commandments, His statutes, His Torah and fearing Him.
Bere’shiyth (Genesis) 26:4-5 – “And I will make אֶת thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed אֶת all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; Because that Avraham obeyed My voice, and did guard My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My Torah.”
Mal’akiy (Malachi) 2:5 – “My covenant was with Him of life and peace; and I gave them to Him for the fear wherewith he feared Me, and was afraid before My name. “
Romaiym (Romans) 9:16 – ” “
**Obedience to Yahuah’s commandments is the foundation that establishes and sustains the covenant, with Yahusha Ha’Mashiach being the perfect example of that obedience and He is the author, administrator, perfect sacrifice and sustainer of the covenant between Yahuah and those who walk with Mashiach Yahusha in the Way.
Trusting Yahuah Rather Than Striving in the Flesh
Instead of striving with the herdsmen of Gerar, Yitschaq put his trust in Yahuah to do as He said He would do.
Bere’shiyth (Genesis) 26:22 – “And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rechovoth; and he said, For now Yahuah hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 34:13-15 – “ Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. The eyes of Yahuah are upon the righteous, and His ears are open unto their cry.“
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 26:3-4 – “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee. Trust ye in Yahuah for ever: for in Yah Yahuah is everlasting strength:
Romaiym (Romans) 12:17-19 – “Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, saith Yahuah.”
Ivriym (Hebrews) 12:14 – “Follow peace with all men, and set-apartness, without which no man shall see Yahuah:”
**Just as Yitschaq did, we are to seek peace instead of striving with others while we are here, forgiving others of the things they have done to us and making peace with them if they so desire.
Hebrew Link Words
Toldoth (tō·wl·ḏōṯ) תּוֹלְדֹ֥ת — “Generations” — Strong’s Hebrew Word 8435 [e]
The Hebrew word תּוֹלְדֹ֥ת (Toldoth) “Generations“ is the title of the sixth portion of Yahuah’s year and is from יָלַד (yalad) which is SHW 3205. Toldoth is (plural only) descent, i.e. Family; (figuratively) history — birth, generations.
It is used as generations (38x) and birth (1x) and in the NASB translation it is account (1), birth (1), genealogical registration (12), genealogies (3), generations (21), order of their birth (1).
**The generations that Yahuah’s covenant was/is passed down through is not predicated upon man’s rules or birthrights but upon Yahuah’ election and will.
Esav (‘ê·śāw) עֵשָֽׂו — “Esau” — Strong’s Hebrew Word 6215 [e]
The Hebrew word עֵשָֽׂו (Esav) “Esau” apparently a form of the passive participle of SHW 6213 in the original sense of handling; rough (i.e. Sensibly felt); Esav, a son of Yitschaq, including his posterity — Esau.
**Covenant disobedience caused Esau to lose his birthright and the blessing of Yitschaq his father.
Ya’aqob (ya·‘ă·qōḇ) יַעֲקֹ֑ב — “Ya’aqov” — Strong’s Hebrew Word 3290 [e]
The Hebrew word יַעֲקֹ֑ב (Ya’aqob) “Ya’aqov” is from SHW 6117; heel-catcher (i.e. Supplanter); Yaakob, the Yashar’eliy patriarch — Ya’aqov.
**Ya’aqov is the supplanter which is someone that replaces another person often by means of force or especially through deception or scheming. Ya’aqov’s scheming and deception was not justified by their outcome of his position with his brother Esau because Yahuah kept His promise by having Yitschaq blessing him for his obedience to the covenant requirements of Yahuah and not the blessings of man’s birthrights.
Yahusha Ha’Mashiach in the Torah Portion
- Yahusha Ha’Mashiach is the Ruach of life when “Avraham begat אֶת Yitschaq”.
- He is the One whom Yitschaq intreated for Rivqah when she was barren.
- Mashiach Yahusha is the One that told Rivqah that there were two nations struggling inside of her and that the elder would serve the younger.
- He is the One that appeared to Yitschaq and told him to sojourn in the land and not go to Mitsrayim during the famine. Mashiach also continued the oath which He sware to Avraham.
- He is El Shaddai who continued the covenant blessings to Yitschaq to make him fruitful for Father Yahuah, multiplied his seed and gave him אֶת the blessing of Avraham.
- Yahusha is who appeared to Yitschaq in Be’er Sheva and told him to fear not for He is with him and that He would bless and multiply his seed for Avraham His servant’s sake.
- He was the wells of water Yitschaq’s men found when the strove with the herdsmen and when he made peace with his enemy Aviymelek.
Reflection & Self-Study Questions
- What does the fact that Yahuah told Rivqah that the older would serve the younger mean to you about what Father Yahuah values when extending His covenant through His Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach?
- Did Yitschaq love Esau for his worldly ability because he already knew Ya’aqov was the chosen of Yahuah?
- Why do you think Esau really sold his birthright to Ya’aqov for the small sum of red stew?
- Do you believe that Yahuah has always taught His Torah to mankind since the beginning with A’dam and Chuah?
- If not, how do you explain all of the Torah commandments that were obeyed from the first offerings of Qayin and H’avel up to Avraham’s obedience of the Torah before it was even mentioned
- What are your thoughts on Yitschaq lying saying Rivqah was his sister?
- When people cast you out and strive with you, are you able to let Father Yahuah handle the situation like Yitschaq with the wells or do you react in the flesh and strive with them also?
- Do you accept the apologies of these people, make peace with them and enter into covenant with them when they come asking for peace, like Yitschaq did, or do you insult and offend them for their actions?
- Was the trickery and scheming of Rivqah and Ya’aqov right in the sight of Yahuah or should they have waited for Yahuah to do what He said He was going to do?
- Was Yitschaq really ignorant that it was not Esau when he gave Ya’aqov the eldest son’s blessing or did he act as if he were ignorant?
- What does it say to you that Ya’aqov obeyed his father and mother and went to take a wife form his mother’s people instead of taking a bride from Kena’an?
- Do you think Esau was really trying to obey his parents by taking a wife from his father Yitschaq’s family or was he it doing it for show?
