Main Themes & Commandments
Magic vs Yahuah
The plagues upon Mitsrayim were not a struggle between Yahuah and magic, but were the direct judgment of Yahuah upon false elohiym, idols, and the lying works of sorcery. Mitsrayim’s magicians did not operate with independent authority—they imitated signs permitted to them, but they didn’t create, nor sustain, and they cannot resist the command of Yahuah. From the beginning, Yahuah declares that He alone will act, and every plague reveals that no power in heaven, earth, or beneath the earth can stand against Him. What Mitsrayim calls “magic” is exposed as limitation, deception, and imitation; What Yahuah speaks is absolute and commands that all creation obey.
Shemoth (Exodus) 7:11–12 – “Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Mitsrayim, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. For they cast down every man his rod, and they became dragons: but Aharon’s rod swallowed up אֶת their rods.”
Shemoth (Exodus) 8:18–19 – “And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth אֶת lice, but they could not: so there were lice upon man, and upon beast. Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of Elohiym: and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as Yahuah had said.”
Shemoth (Exodus) 9:11 – “And the magicians could not stand before Mosheh because of the boils; for the boil was upon the magicians, and upon all the Mitsriym.”
Shemoth (Exodus) 12:12 – “For I will pass through the land of Mitsrayim this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Mitsrayim, both man and beast; and against all the elohiym of Mitsrayim I will execute judgment: I am Yahuah.”
**There is no contest between Yahuah and any other power. Yahuah alone is Elohiym. The plagues reveal that every false system collapses, every iniquity is judged, and every counterfeit authority is broken under His Word. When Yahuah speaks, nothing can resist His command.
The Heart of Stone
Pharaoh’s heart reveals what happens when a person repeatedly rejects the Word of Yahuah. At first, Pharaoh hardens his own heart. Then, as judgment increases, Yahuah confirms that hardness as righteous judgment. This is not a struggle of equals—it is the judgment of Yahuah against persistent rebellion. A heart that refuses Yahuah does not remain neutral, it becomes increasingly resistant until it is no longer able to respond rightly, even in the face of undeniable miracles. Pharaoh hears truth, sees power, and witnesses judgment, yet continues in defiance because his heart is set against Yahuah.
Shemoth (Exodus) 8:15 – “But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite, he hardened אֶת his heart, and hearkened not unto them; as Yahuah had said.”
Shemoth (Exodus) 9:12 – “And Yahuah hardened אֶת the heart of Pharaoh, and he hearkened not unto them; as Yahuah had spoken unto El-Mosheh.”
Shemoth (Exodus) 10:1 – “And Yahuah said unto Mosheh, Go in unto Pharaoh: for I have hardened אֶת his heart, and the heart of his servants, that I might shew these My signs before him:”
Mishlei (Proverbs) 28:14 – “Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.”
Ivriym (Hebrews) 3:15 – “While it is said, To day if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.”
**A hardened heart is not merely emotional resistance—it is spiritual judgment. Pharaoh becomes an example that repeated rejection of Yahuah results in deeper bondage to rebellion itself.
Continued Obedience to Yahuah
Mosheh and Aharon stand as witnesses of unwavering obedience to Yahuah in the face of total rejection. Pharaoh refuses to listen. Yashar’el is discouraged and burdened which makes them not listen. The magicians oppose and imitate them, yet Mosheh and Aharon do not deviate from a single command of Yahuah. They speak exactly what is given, go exactly where they are sent, and act exactly as instructed. Their authority is not in themselves but in complete submission to Yahuah’s Word. Because they obey without compromise, the power of Yahuah is revealed through them in increasing measure, and His judgments are executed exactly as spoken.
Shemoth (Exodus) 7:6 – “And Mosheh and Aharon did as Yahuah commanded them, so did they.”
Shemoth (Exodus) 7:10 – “And Mosheh and Aharon went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as Yahuah had commanded: and Aharon cast down אֶת his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a dragon.”
Shemoth (Exodus) 9:27 – “And Pharaoh sent, and called for Mosheh and Aharon, and said unto them, I have sinned this time: Yahuah is righteous, and I and my people are wicked.”
Yochanon (John) 14:15 – “If ye love Me, guard My commandments.”
Romaiym (Romans) 6:16 – “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?”
**Obedience to Yahuah is not validated by acceptance from men, but by faithfulness to His command alone. Mosheh and Aharon show that when Yahuah is obeyed fully, His power is fully revealed.
Set-apart by Yahuah
Yashar’el is not simply a nation among nations—they are the chosen, called-out, set-apart assembly of Yahuah. From the beginning of the plagues, Yahuah makes a clear and repeated distinction between Mitsrayim and Yashar’el. While Mitsrayim is struck with increasing judgment, Yashar’el is preserved in Goshen. This separation is not based on natural strength, geography, or human merit, but solely on covenant identity established by Yahuah. He declares again and again that He is making a difference between His people and the Mitsriym, so that all the earth will know that He alone is Yahuah.
Shemoth (Exodus) 8:22–23 – “And I will sever in that day the אֶת land of Goshen, in which My people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end thou mayest know that I am Yahuah in the midst of the earth. And I will put a division between My people and thy people: to morrow shall this sign be..”
Shemoth (Exodus) 9:4 – “And Yahuah shall sever between the cattle of Yashar’el and the cattle of Mitsrayim: and there shall nothing die of all that is the children’s of Yashar’el.”
Shemoth (Exodus) 9:26 – “Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Yashar’el were, was there no hail.”
Devariym (Deuteronomy) 7:6 – “For thou art a set-apart people unto Yahuah Elohayka: Yahuah Elohayka hath chosen thee to be a special people unto Himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 135:4 – “For Yahuah hath chosen Ya’aqov unto Himself, and Yashar’el for His peculiar treasure.”
**Yashar’el is set-apart not by their strength, but by the covenant word of Yahuah. They are His possession, His people, and His dwelling among the nations. What Yahuah distinguishes, no power can reverse; what He separates, no force can reunite. We are called out to be His, and His alone.
Hebrew Link Words
Va’eira (wā·’ê·rā) (וָאֵרָ֗א) — “And I appeared“ — Strong’s Hebrew word 7200 [e]
The Hebrew word וָאֵרָ֗א (Va’eira) means in this instance to appear. The root of va’eira is ra’ah which is translated to see, observe, perceive, get acquainted with, gain understanding, examine, look after, choose, or to discover. This is how Yahuah appeared to the forefathers of the faith and it gives us a path as to how we need to see our relationship with Father Yahuah. He will appear if we ra’ah.
Yahusha Ha’Mashiach in the Torah Portion
- He is the One through whom Father Yahuah revealed His covenant faithfulness, declaring that He would remember His covenant with Avraham, Yitschaq, and Ya’aqov, redeem His people, and bring them into the land He had promised.
- He is the Redeemer foreshadowed in Yahuah’s promise, “I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments,” revealing the salvation that comes through the Arm of Yahuah.
- He is the Aleph-Tav of the covenant, for Yahuah declared, “I have also established אֶת My covenant with them,” revealing that every covenant promise is established and fulfilled through Mashiach Yahusha.
- He is the Aleph-Tav who heard אֶת the groaning of the children of Yashar’el and remembered אֶת the covenant, demonstrating that the Deliverer had not forgotten His people in their affliction.
- Yahusha Ha’Mashiach is the stretched-out Arm of Yahuah by whom the children of Yashar’el are redeemed through mighty judgments, revealing both the justice and mercy of Father Yahuah.
- He is the One through whom Father Yahuah stretched forth אֶת His hand upon Mitsrayim, bringing forth אֶת His armies and אֶת His people, the children of Yashar’el, out of bondage by great judgments.
- He is the Aleph-Tav in the signs and wonders, for Yahuah declared, “I will multiply אֶת My signs and My wonders in the land of Mitsrayim,” revealing that every miracle testifies to His authority over creation.
- He is the One before whom every counterfeit power is swallowed up, as Aharon’s rod swallowed אֶת the rods of the magicians, declaring that the authority of Yahuah consumes every false work of man and every lying wonder.
- He is the One who turned אֶת the waters of Mitsrayim into blood, demonstrating that all creation obeys the command of its Creator.
- He is the One who turned אֶת the dust of the earth into lice, causing the magicians to confess, “This is the finger of Elohiym,” for no created power can imitate the works of the Creator.
- He is the One who established אֶת the division between His people and Mitsrayim, revealing that Father Yahuah alone sets apart those who belong to Him.
- He is the Aleph and the Tav revealed throughout the judgments of Mitsrayim, for the repeated witness of אֶת throughout the account testifies that the covenant, the hand of Yahuah, His signs, His people, and His judgments all point to Mashiach Yahusha, through whom Father Yahuah accomplishes the yeshu’a (salvation) of His people.
Reflection & Self-Study Questions
- Yahuah declared, “I have remembered אֶת My covenant,” even though generations had passed since His promises to Avraham, Yitschaq, and Ya’aqov. When Yahuah seems silent or His promises seem delayed, do I continue trusting His faithfulness, or do I become impatient and doubt His timing?
- Yahuah repeatedly declared, “I am Yahuah,” before revealing His mighty works. Is my faith established upon who Yahuah is, or do I only trust Him after I have seen Him work in my circumstances?
- Mosheh faithfully delivered Yahuah’s message even after the children of Yashar’el refused to hear him because of anguish of ruach and cruel bondage. When others reject the truth I share, do I remain faithful to Yahuah’s calling, or do I become discouraged and withdraw?
- Mosheh again confessed that he was “of uncircumcised lips,” yet Yahuah did not withdraw His calling. Do I allow my perceived weaknesses to become excuses for disobedience, or do I trust Yahuah to accomplish His purpose through me?
- Yahuah commanded Mosheh and Aharon to speak unto Pharaoh long before Pharaoh showed any willingness to listen. Am I willing to obey Yahuah simply because He has spoken, even when I cannot yet see the results?
- The magicians of Mitsrayim imitated several of Yahuah’s signs but could not reproduce His creative power or stop His judgments. Am I careful to discern between what merely appears powerful and what truly comes from Yahuah according to His Word?
- Pharaoh repeatedly hardened his heart after witnessing the mighty works of Yahuah. When Yahuah corrects or disciplines me, do I humble myself and repent quickly, or do I resist His instruction and become harder toward His voice?
- Even after confessing, “I have sinned this time: Yahuah is righteous, and I and my people are wicked,” Pharaoh returned to his rebellion. Is my repentance genuine and accompanied by obedience, or do I only seek relief from the consequences of my sin?
- Yahuah made a clear distinction between Yashar’el and Mitsrayim, protecting His covenant people while judging rebellion. Does my daily walk demonstrate that I have been called out and set apart unto Yahuah, or is my life becoming indistinguishable from the world around me?
- Some of Pharaoh’s servants feared אֶת the Word of Yahuah and brought their servants and livestock under shelter before the hail fell, while others ignored His warning. When Yahuah gives instruction through His Word, do I respond immediately in obedient faith, or do I delay until judgment comes?
- Yahuah multiplied His signs and wonders so that both Yashar’el and the nations would know that He alone is Yahuah. Is my life pointing others toward the greatness of Father Yahuah, or am I drawing attention to myself?
- Every plague exposed the emptiness of the idols and the false worship of Mitsrayim. Are there possessions, ambitions, traditions, relationships, or pleasures that have quietly become idols in my life, competing with my wholehearted devotion to Yahuah?
- Mosheh and Aharon obeyed every command exactly as Yahuah had spoken. Am I seeking partial obedience that fits my preferences, or complete obedience that honors every commandment of Yahuah?
- Yahuah declared that Pharaoh had been raised up so that His name might be declared throughout all the earth. Do I recognize that even difficult people and painful circumstances may be used by Yahuah to reveal His glory and accomplish His greater purpose in my life?
- Throughout this portion, Yahuah revealed Himself as the Redeemer who brings His people out of bondage with a stretched-out arm and great judgments. Is there an area of bondage, compromise, fear, or unbelief that I continue trying to overcome in my own strength instead of surrendering it completely to the redeeming power of Father Yahuah?
Personal Application
- What promise of Yahuah am I waiting to see fulfilled, and how can I strengthen my trust in His perfect timing rather than becoming discouraged by delays?
- Am I allowing disappointment, hardship, or the burdens of life to keep me from hearing and responding to the voice of Yahuah, as the children of Yashar’el did because of anguish of ruach and cruel bondage?
- What area of my life requires faithful obedience, even when I cannot yet see how Yahuah intends to accomplish His purpose?
- Have I allowed repeated compromise, pride, or unbelief to harden my heart toward the conviction of Yahuah, or do I respond quickly with humility and repentance?
- Is there an idol, habit, tradition, relationship, or worldly pursuit that is competing for the place in my heart that belongs to Yahuah alone?
- How can I more intentionally live as one who has been called out and set apart by Yahuah, demonstrating His righteousness through my words, decisions, and daily conduct?
- Am I faithfully standing for the truth of Yahuah’s Word even when it is rejected, ignored, or opposed by those around me?
- What fruit of the Ruach is Yahuah seeking to produce in my life through the trials, opposition, or testing I am presently experiencing?
