Tehilliym (Psalms) 50
A blistering indictment against hypocrisy and formalism in worship.
Introduction:
Tehilliym 50 is the first of the psalms of Asaph, the son of Berachiah of the family of Gershon. Asaph was a musician appointed by king Da’vid to lead the sacred choral services of Yashar’el. The grandeur of this psalm can be seen in it’s opening verse where it gives three of the names for Elohiym: El, Elohiym and Yahuah.
The psalm is as relevant now as it was then in letting the whole earth know that Yahuah is not pleased with empty sacrifices. He does not desire the blood of sheep, goats, oxen, or our empty words of love for Him. He desires our faithful obedience to His commandments, guarding His covenant and us giving up worldly pursuits to seek Him with our whole heart and soul.
Tehilliym 50 (KJV-YS):
Verses 1-3: Yahuah, the Perfection of Beauty
“1. A mizmor (melody of praise) of Asaph. El Elohiym (The mighty God), even Yahuah, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof. 2. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, Elohiym hath shined. 3.Our Elohiym shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before Him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about Him.”
Insights:Elohiym is mighty and His name is Yahuah. He calls the whole earth to Him everyday and His perfect beauty shines to all who seek His Truth.
Cross References Verses 1-3:

Ivriym (Hebrews) 12:28-29 – “Wherefore we receiving a Kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve Elohiym acceptably with reverence and in the fear of Elohiym: For our Elohiym is a consuming fire.”
Summary: Yahuah calls everyone to Him everyday in His own beautiful and special way. His beauty shines for all to see and He will not keep silent before the earth. He doesn’t want anyone to be consumed by His fire and wrath.
Verses 4-6: Elohiym the Righteous Judge
“4. He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that He may judge His people. 5. Gather My chasiyd (merciful saints) together unto Me; those that have made a covenant with Me by sacrifice. 6. And the heavens shall declare His righteousness: for Elohiym is judge Himself. Selah.“
Insights:Yahuah will call His people so that He can judge them in righteousness and He will gather His merciful saints that keep His covenant unto Him.

Summary: Yahuah is the righteous judge that will call all people unto judgment and those that have entered into covenant with Him through the sacrifice of giving up this world to inherit the next.
Verses 7–11: Yahuah Doesn’t Desire Meaningless Sacrifices
“7. Hear, O My people, and I will speak; O Yashar’el, and I will testify against thee: I am Elohiym, even thy Elohiym. 8. I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before Me. 9. I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds. 10. For every beast of the forest is Mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. 11. I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are Mine.
Insights:Yahuah has no desire for the meaningless sacrifices or hollow offerings we bring to Him because if He desire anything, everything belongs to Him

Tehilliym (Psalms) 40:6-8 – “Sacrifice and offering Thou didst not desire; mine ears hast Thou opened: ascending smoke offering and sin offering hast Thou not required. Miykah (Micah) 6:6-8 – “Wherewith shall I come before Yahuah, and bow myself before the high Elohiym? shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Will Yahuah be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth Yahuah require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy Elohiym? ”
Ma’asiym (Acts) 17:24-25 – “Elohiym that made the world and all things therein, seeing that He is Yahuah of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though He needed any thing, seeing He giveth to all life, and breath, and all things.”
Summary: Yahuah is the Creator of all things in heaven and earth, what can man give Him? He desires the obedience from His chosen people, for them to walk in His ways and to guard His commandments.
Verses 12-13: Yahuah Needs Nothing from Man
“12. If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is Mine, and the fulness thereof. 13. Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?”
Insights:Once again Elohiym declares that the world is His and all that is within it. What can man offer Yahuah?
Cross References Verse 12–13:
Shemoth (Exodus) 19:5-6a – “Now therefore, if ye will obey My voice indeed, and guard My covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto Me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto Me a kingdom of priests, and a set-apart nation. ”

1st Qorintiym (Corinthians) 10:26 – “For the earth is the Yahuah’s, and the fulness thereof. ”
Summary: Yahuah doesn’t need food, He is a spiritual being, Creator of everything. He doesn’t desire the flesh of bulls or the blood of goats from us, only our love.
Verses 14-15: Pay to Yahuah What You Vow
“14. Offer unto Elohiym thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto El Elyon (the Most High): 15. And call upon Me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify Me.”
Insights:We are to offer thanksgiving unto Elohiym and pay our vows to Him and He will deliver us when we are in trouble and call upon Him.
Cross References Verse 14–15:
Devariym (Deuteronomy) 23:21-22 – “When thou shalt vow a vow unto Yahuah Elohayka, thou shalt not slack to pay it: for Yahuah Elohayka will surely require it of thee; and it would be sin in thee. But if thou shalt forbear to vow, it shall be no sin in thee.”

Ivriym (Hebrews) 13:15-29 – “By Him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to Elohiym continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name. But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices Elohiym is well pleased.”
Mattithyahu (Matthew) 24:31 – “Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto Yahuah thine oaths: But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is Elohiym’s throne: Nor by the earth; for it is His footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.”
Summary: When we make a vow to Yahuah, we should do that which we have vowed. It is better to not vow and try to complete that which we would want to do for Yahuah than to vow and not to complete our vows to Father Yahuah.
Verses 16-17: The Wicked Pretenders
“16. But unto the wicked Elohiym saith, What hast thou to do to declare My statutes, or that thou shouldest take My covenant in thy mouth? 17. Seeing thou hatest instruction, and casteth My words behind thee.”
Insights:The evil and the wicked think because they say flattering things with their mouth that they can fool Yahuah.
Cross References Verse 16–17:
Tehilliym (Psalms) 78:36-38 – “Nevertheless they did flatter Him with their mouth, and they lied unto Him with their tongues. For their heart was not right with Him, neither were they stedfast in His covenant. Mattithyahu (Matthew) 7:21-23 – “ Not every one that saith unto me, Adonai, Adonai, shall enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he that doeth the will of My Father which is in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, Adonai, Adonai have we rnot prophesied in Thy name? and in Thy name have cast out devils? and in Thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity.”
Romayim (Romans) 2:21-24 – “Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? Thou that sayest a man should not break wedlock (commit adultery), dost thou break wedlock ? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege? Thou that makest thy boast of the Torah (Law), through breaking the Torah dishonourest thou Elohiym? For the name of Elohiym is blasphemed among the other nations through you, as it is written ”
Summary: Words are easy to speak and proclaim, but Yahuah knows our heart better than we do and we cannot fool Him. The wicked will receive their just reward one day soon.
Verses 18-23: Final Plea to the Wicked
“18 When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with those who break wedlock (adulterers). 19. Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.20.Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother’s son.21.These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. 22. Now consider this, ye that forget Elohiym, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver. 23. Whoso offereth praise glorifieth Me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of Elohiym.”
Insights:Yahuah makes a final pleas to the wicked for them to not do wicked things and to glorify Him.
Cross References Verse 18–23:

Vayiqra (Leviticus) 20:10 – “And the man that breaks wedlock with another man’s woman (wife), even he that breaks wedlock with his neighbour’s woman, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 10:4-7 – “The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after Elohiym: Elohiym: is not in all his thoughts. His ways are always grievous; Thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them. He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity. His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.”
Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 57:11 – “And of whom hast thou been afraid or feared, that thou hast lied, and hast not remembered Me, nor laid it to thy heart? have not I held my peace even of old, and thou fearest Me not?”
Husha (Hosea) 4:6 – “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to Me: seeing thou hast forgotten the Torah of thy Elohiym, I will also forget thy children.”

Romayim (Romans) 12:1-2 – “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of Elohiym, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, set-apart, acceptable unto Elohiym, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of Elohiym.”
1st Kepha (Peter) 2:9 – “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a set-apart nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous light:”
Summary: In this final section, Yahuah makes a final plea to the wicked to turn from their evil ways. If we see evil going on and do nothing to stop it, we are guilty. Yahuah wants us to treat our neighbors as we would want to be treated. Our whole duty is to love Elohiym by glorifying Him through the ordering of our conversation and we will receive His salvation.
Conclusion: Tehelliym 50 is a psalm that highlights Elohiym’s judgment of His people for their hypocrisy and superficial worship, emphasizing that authentic worship requires a heart devoted to Elohiym and obedience to His commands. The psalm contrasts Elohiym’s ownership of all things with the people’s perception of offering Him sacrifices, suggesting that Elohiym is not dependent on their rituals. Ultimately, Elohiym calls for sincere worship and obedience rather than mere outward displays of piety.
