Tehilliym (Psalms) 55
A prayer of confidence in the face of distress and treachery.
Introduction:
Tehilliym 55 is a psalm that is believed to be written by king Da’vid during the rebellion of his son Avshalom, focusing on feelings of betrayal and deep distress. It expresses Da’vid’s anguish over the treachery of a close companion and his desire to escape the turmoil surrounding him. The psalm highlights the pain of betrayal and the emotional toll it takes on believers, while also showcasing Da’vid’s faith in Elohiym’s justice and deliverance. The psalm also has mashiach overtones that point to Yahusha Ha’Mashaich’s suffering over the betrayal of Yahudah (Judas).
Tehilliym 55 (KJV-YS):
Verses 1-5: A Humble Plea to Elohiym
Insights: Da’vid begins the psalm by coming boldly to the throne of grace and mercy and crying to Elohiym to hear hear his prayer and to not hid Himself from his humble plea for salvation.
“1. Give ear to my prayer, O Elohiym; and hide not Thyself from my supplication. 2. Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise; 3. Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me. 4. My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me. 5. Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.”

Luqas (Luke) 22:44 – “And being in an agony He prayed more earnestly: and His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.”
Reflection: The psalmist cries out for Elohiym to save him from the suffering, hatred and iniquity the enemy has cast upon him and he realizes that it is only by Yahuah that we are ultimately sheltered eternally and that salvation is provided through His Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach, who went through the same suffering and hatred from the enemy and overcame.
Verses 6-11: Flying Away from Trouble
Insights: Da’vid wishes that he could escape from the storm that is going on around him because the enemy only wants to do wickedness in the city.
“6. And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest. 7. Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah. 8. I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest. 9. Destroy, O Adonai (Lord), and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city. 10. Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it. 11. Wickedness is in the midst thereof: deceit and guile depart not from her streets.”

Tehilliym (Psalms) 11:1 – “In Yahuah put I my trust: how say Ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to Your mountain? For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart.”

v-9
Bere’shiyth (Genesis) 11:7-8 – “Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. So Yahuah scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.”
Mattithyahu (Matthew) 23:37-38 – “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!”
v-10
Tehilliym (Psalms) 59:14-15 – “ And at evening let them return; and let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city. Let them wander up and down for meat, and grudge if they be not satisfied.”

Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them את which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:”
Reflection: The portrayal of being like a bird represents the psalmist’s longing to leave the turmoil going on around him and be in the presence of Elohiym through His Ruach Ha’Qodesh where the true fellowship, protection and salvation of Yahuah reside. The enemy is always looking for a way to defeat the followers of Yahuah but because of the the Ruach Ha’Qodesh we have victory through Yahusha Ha’Mashiach who already overcame and defeated the enemy.
Verses 12-14: The Betrayal of a Close Friend
Insights: Da’vid tells of how he was betrayed, not by an enemy, but by a person who was supposed to have been his brother in the faith of Yahuah.
“12. For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: 13. But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. 14. We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of Elohiym in company.”

Reflection: The worst betrayals in life come from those who are the closest to us and Da’vid tells of this betrayal happening to him, from his own son. This is a foreshadowing of the betrayal by Yahudah (Judas) of Yahusha Ha’Mashiach when he betrayed Him for thirty pieces of silver.

“15. Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.”

Verses 16-21: The Peace of the Saved
Insights: Da’vid speaks of his faith in Yahuah’s salvation compared to the evil person’s trust in their lies and deceit.
“16. As for me, I will call upon Elohiym; and Yahuah shall save me.17. Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and He shall hear my voice.18. He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me.19. Elohiym shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not Elohiym.20. He hath put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him: he hath broken his covenant.21. The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.”

Reflection: The wicked put their trust in their lying and crafty words that they use to deceive and entrap the true followers of Yahuah. The righteous will always have peace in the end because of their trust in the truth of Yahuah.
Verses 22-23: Yahuah the Burden Bearer
Insights: Da’vid closes the psalm telling the righteous to cast their burdens upon Yahuah but the wicked will be brought to destruction.
“22. Cast thy burden upon Yahuah, and He shall sustain thee: He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. 23. But Thou, O Elohiym, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in Thee.”

Mattithyahu (Matthew) 6:25 – “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?”
