Tehilliym (Psalms) 60

Da’vid prayed to Elohiym for the thrill of victory after he had experienced the agony of defeat.

To the chief Musician upon Shu-shaneduth, Michtam of Da’vid, to teach; when he strove את with
Aram-Naharaim and with Aram-Tsovah, when Yo’av returned, and smote of Edom in the valley of salt twelve thousand.

Introduction:

Tehilliym 60 is a psalm that was written by Da’vid and is a psalm of lament and supplication, intended for instruction, which transitions from a national defeat to confidence in Elohiym’s victory over enemies. It expresses sorrow over Elohiym’s apparent anger and rejection, compares the national calamity to an earthquake, and acknowledges human powerlessness. The psalm then recalls Elohiym’s promises of land division and divine aid, concluding with the strong assertion that Elohiym will lead them to victory, and true valor comes only through Him.

Tehilliym 60 (KJV-YS):

Verses 1-3: Praying for Elohiym to Return

Insights: The psalm begins with Da’vid praying for Elohiym to return His favor to Yashar’el.

“1. O Elohiym, Thou hast cast us off, Thou hast scattered us, Thou hast been displeased; O turn Thyself to us again. 2. Thou hast made the earth to tremble; Thou hast broken it: heal the breaches thereof; for it shaketh. 3. Thou hast shewed Thy people hard things: Thou hast made us to drink the wine of astonishment.”

Cross References:
v-1: “O Elohiym, Thou hast cast us off, Thou hast scattered us, Thou hast been displeased; O turn Thyself to us again.
2nd Shemu’el (Samuel) 8:13 – “And Da’vid gat him a name when he returned from smiting of the Syrians in the valley of salt, being eighteen thousand men.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 89:38 –
“But Thou hast cast off and abhorred, Thou hast been wroth with Thine anointed.”
Reflection: Da’vid prays for Elohiym to turn to Yashar’el and not to cast them aside or scatter them anymore.

v-2: Thou hast made the earth to tremble; Thou hast broken it: heal the breaches thereof; for it shaketh.”
2nd Hayamiym (Chronicles) 7:14 – “If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
Husha (Hosea) 6:1 “Come, and let us return unto Yahuah: for He hath torn, and He will heal us; He hath smitten, and He will bind us up.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 5:25 –
“Therefore is the anger of Yahuah kindled against His people, and He hath stretched forth His hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.”
1st Tasloniqiym (Thessalonians) 5:9
“For Elohiym hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Adonai Yahusha Ha’Mashiach,”
Reflection: The anger of Elohiym cannot be imagined and it is in our best interest to avoid Him being angry with us.

v-3: Thou hast shewed Thy people hard things: Thou hast made us to drink the wine of astonishment.”
Mishlei (Proverbs) 3:11-12 – “My son, despise not the chastening of Yahuah; neither be weary of His correction: For whom Yahuah loveth He correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 51:21-22 –
“Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine: Thus saith thy Adonai Yahuah, and thy Elohiym that pleadeth the cause of His people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of My fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:”
Ivriym (Hebrews) 12:6 –
“For whom Yahuah loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth. If ye endure chastening, Elohiym dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.”
Reflection: The sin of the people caused Elohiym to chastise Yashar’el and they had to drink of the wine of astonishment of Elohiym which is the feeling of spiritual distress, helplessness and bewilderment.

Verses 4-5: The Banner of Yahuah

Insights: Da’vid acknowledges that Elohiym is the banner of those that fear Yahuah and it is displayed because of the Truth. It is only under this banner that we will be delivered by the right hand of Yahuah.

“4. Thou hast given a banner to them that fear Thee, that it may be displayed because of the Truth. Selah. 5. That thy beloved may be delivered; save with Thy right hand, and hear me.”

Cross References:
v-4: “Thou hast given a banner to them that fear Thee, that it may be displayed because of the Truth. Selah”
Shemoth (Exodus) 17:9-11 & 15 “And Mosheh said unto Yahusha (Joshua son of Nun), Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of Elohiym in mine hand. So Yahusha did as Mosheh had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Mosheh, Aharon, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. And it came to pass, when Mosheh held up his hand, that Yashar’el prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. 15. And Mosheh built an altar, and called the name of it Yahuah Nissiy (Yahuah is my banner or KJV Jehovah-Nissi):”
Shiyr Li’Shalomah
(Song of Solomon ) 2:4 – “He brought me to the banqueting house, and His banner over me was love.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 11:10-12 –“And in that day there shall be a root of Yishai, which shall stand for an ensign (banner/flag) of the people; to it shall the other nations (Gentiles) seek: and His rest shall be glorious. And it shall come to pass in that day, that Yahuah shall set His hand again the second time to recover the remnant of His people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Mitsrayim (Egypt), and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. And He shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Yashar’el, and gather together the dispersed of Yahudah (Judah) from the four corners of the earth.”
Romaiym (Romans) 15:12 –
“And again, Yesha’yahu saith, There shall be a root of Yishai, and He that shall rise to reign over the other nations (Gentiles); in Him shall the other nations trust.”
Reflection: Da’vid knows that the banner of Elohiym is Yahusha Ha’Mashiach just as Shalomah did in the Song of Shalomah. We must be very careful of the banners and flags we raise above our lives because they all mean things that we really don’t understand and they are all pagan. Mashiach Yahusha is the only banner/flag we should raise in our life.

v-5:
That thy beloved may be delivered; save with Thy right hand, and hear me.”
Shemoth (Exodus) 15:6
“Thy right hand, O Yahuah, is become glorious in power: Thy right hand, O Yahuah, hath dashed in pieces the enemy.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 41:10 –
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy Elohiym: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness.”
Ma’asiym (Acts) 2:32-33 –
“This Yahusha hath Elohiym raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. To the right hand therefore of Elohiym He hath been exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Ruach Ha’Qodesh, He hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.”
Reflection: Da’vid calls for Yahuah to hear and deliver him with His right hand. Throughout the scriptures the right hand of Yahuah is Mashiach Yahusha. He has been the strength, protection and redeemer of those that fear Yahuah since the beginning.

Verses 6-8: Everything is Elohiym’s

Insights: Elohiym says that all of the tribes, land and nations around Da’vid are His and He will put them in subjection under Da’vid and his eternal Heir.
“6. Elohiym hath spoken in His set-apartness; I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Sukkoth. 7. Gilead is Mine, and Manashsheh is Mine; Ephrayim also is the strength of Mine head; Yahudah is My Torah giver (lawgiver); 8. Moab is My washpot; over Edom will I cast out My shoe: Philistia, triumph thou because of Me.”

Cross References:
v-6: “Elohiym hath spoken in His set-apartness; I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Sukkoth.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 56:4 – “In Elohiym I will praise his word, in Elohiym I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 119:162 – “I rejoice at Thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.”
Reflection:
Shechem and the valley of Sukkoth were important lands that had not submitted to Da’vid’s rule.

v-7:Gilead is Mine, and Manashsheh is Mine; Ephrayim also is the strength of Mine head; Yahudah is My Torah giver (lawgiver);”
Bere’shiyth (Genesis) 49:10 –
“The sceptre shall not depart from Yahudah, nor a Torah giver (lawgiver) from between his feet, until Shiloh come; land unto him shall the gathering of the people be.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 108:8 –
“Gilead is mine; Manashsheh is Mine; Ephrayim also is the strength of Mine head; Yahudah is My Torah giver;”
Reflection: Gilead and Manashsheh were large territories east of the Yardan river. Mashiach is of the tribe of Yahudah and He is the Torah giver of Yahuah.

v-8: Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe: Philistia, triumph thou because of me.”
Bere’shiyth (Genesis) 25:23 –“And Yahuah said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 108:9 –
“ Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out My shoe; over Philistia will I triumph.”
Reflection:
Edom and Moab are given the lowly status of slaves once they are conquered.

Verses 9-10: Elohiym the Ultimate Leader

Insights: Da’vid asks who will lead him to victory over the strong city and Edom and prays that Elohiym will lead them, go with their armies and not cast them off as before.
“9. Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom? 10. Wilt not Thou, O Elohiym, which hadst cast us off? and Thou, O Elohiym, which didst not go out with our armies?”

Cross References:
v-9: Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?”
Devariym (Deuteronomy) 20:4 – “For Yahuah Elohaykem is He that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.”
Reflection: Da’vid know that he cannot lead the children of Yashar’el to victory unless Elohiym is with them.

v-10:
Wilt not Thou, O Elohiym, which hadst cast us off? and Thou, O Elohiym, which didst not go out with our armies?”
Devariym (Deuteronomy) 1:42 – “And Yahuah said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 108:11 –
“Wilt not thou, O Elohiym, Who hast cast us off? and wilt not Thou, O Elohiym, go forth with our hosts?”
2nd Qorintiym (Corinthians) 2:14 –
“Now thanks be unto Elohiym, which always causeth us to triumph in Mashiach (Christ), and maketh manifest the savour of His knowledge by us in every place.”
Reflection: Da’vid ask Elohiym if He will lead them and he knows that only if the right hand of Yahuah goes before him will his military campaign be successful.

Verses 11-12: Elohiym the Ultimate Help

Insights: Da’vid prays for help in the time of trouble from Elohiym because he knows that man cannot save him.
“11. Give us help from trouble: for vain is the salvation of man. 12. Through Elohiym we shall do valiantly: for He it is that shall tread down our enemies.”

Cross References:
v-11: “Give us help from trouble: for vain is the salvation of man.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 124:1-3 – “If it had not been Yahuah Who was on our side, now may Yashar’el say; If it had not been Yahuah Who was on our side, when men rose up against us: Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 146:3 –
“Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no salvation.”
Ma’asiym (Acts) 4:12 –
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
Reflection: People always look for other people to save them but Da’vid places his trust in Elohiym instead of man just as we should always do.

v-12: “Through Elohiym we shall do valiantly: for He it is that shall tread down our enemies.”
Yahusha (Joshua) 1:9“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for Yahuah Elohaykem is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 63:3 –“I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with Me: for I will tread them in Mine anger, and trample them in My fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon My garments, and I will stain all My raiment ”
Chazon (Revelation) 19:15
“ And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations: and He shall rule them with a rod of iron: and He treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of El Elyon (Almighty Elohiym).”
Reflection: Da’vid relies completely on Elohiym for Yashar’el to act valiantly as they face their enemies and he knows that Elohiym will tread his enemies down under His feet as a winepress crushing grapes.

Conclusion:
Tehilliym 60 is a prayer acknowledging defeat but expressing confidence in Elohiym’s eventual triumph, urging reliance on His power for victory rather than human effort. It serves as a reminder that, even in times of divine discipline and hardship, Elohiym’s faithfulness and covenant promises remain, calling for unwavering trust in Him to restore and deliver His people and grant them victory over their enemies
