Tehilliym (Psalms) 63
A hungry and thirsty soul finds relief in Elohiym.
A Psalm of Da’vid, when he was in the wilderness of Yahudah.
Introduction:
Psalm 63 is a psalm written by Da’vid during his time of exile in the wilderness, likely while fleeing his son Avsalom. It is a psalm of deep devotion and praise, where Da’vid expresses his intense longing for Elohiym, compares his soul’s thirst to a dry land, and reflects on Elohiym’s past help and future deliverance. Despite being in a desperate situation, Da’vid finds satisfaction in seeking Elohiym and trusts that Elohiym will provide and exalt him.
Tehilliym 63 (KJV-YS):
Verses 1-2: Seeking Elohiym First
Insights: Da’vid declares that he will seek Elohiym first thing because he has a strong desire to see Him in His power and glory.
“1. O Elohiym, thou art my El; early will I seek Thee: my soul thirsteth for Thee, my flesh longeth for Thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; 2. To see Thy power and Thy glory, so as I have seen Thee in the sanctuary.”
Cross References:
v-1: “O Elohiym, thou art my El; early will I seek Thee: my soul thirsteth for Thee, my flesh longeth for Thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;”
Shemoth (Exodus) 15:2 – “Yahuah is my strength and song, and He is become my salvation: He is my Elohiym, and I will prepare Him an habitation; my father’s Elohiym, and I will exalt Him.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 42:1-2 – “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O Elohiym. My soul thirsteth for Elohiym, for the living Elohiym: when shall I come and appear before Elohiym?”
Mishlei (Proverbs) 8:17 – “I love them that love Me; and those that seek Me early shall find Me. Riches and honour are with Me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 32:1-2 – “Behold, a King shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment. And a Man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.”
Yochanon (John) 7:2 & 37 – “Now the Yahudiym (Jews’) Feast of Sukkoth (Feast of Tabernacles) was at hand. In the last day, that great day of the feast, Yahusha stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink.”
Chazon (Revelation) 7:16-17 – “They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and Elohiym shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.”
Reflection: The psalms opens with Da’vid showing us how we are to seek Elohiym early. Seeking Him should be the first thing we should do every day just as we seek water and food for our body. Yahusha Ha’Mashiach is the fountain of living waters and the bread from heaven, that once we drink and eat of we will never thirst or hunger again.
v-2: “To see Thy power and Thy glory, so as I have seen Thee in the sanctuary.”
Shemoth (Exodus) 15:2 – “And he said, I beseech thee, shew me Thy glory. And He said, I will make all My goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of Yahuah before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 145:11-12 – “They shall speak of the glory of Thy kingdom, and talk of Thy power; To make known to the sons of men His mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of His kingdom.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 6:1-3 – “In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also Yahuah sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and His train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphiyms: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Set-apart, set-apart, set-apart , is Yahuah Tseva’oth: the whole earth is full of His glory.”
Yochanon (John) 1:14 – “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
2nd Qorintiym (Corinthians) 4:4-6 –“In whom the elohiym of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious besorah (gospel) of Mashiach, who is the image of Elohiym, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Adonai Mashiach Yahusha; and ourselves your servants for Yahusha’s sake. For Elohiym, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of Elohiym in the face of Yahusha Ha’Mashiach.”
Reflection: We are to seek the beauty and power of Elohiym through His Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach and to not be blinded by the tricks of the enemy.
Verses 3-4: Elohiym’s Love is Better than Life
Insights: Da’vid declare that Elohiym’s lovingkindness is better to him than life itself and that is why he will continually praise, bless and lift his hands in praise to Elohiym.
“3. Because Thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise Thee. 4. Thus will I bless Thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in Thy name.”
Cross References:
v-3: “Because Thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise Thee.”

Reflection: Da’vid vows to praise Elohiym with his lips because He is more important than life itself to him.
v-4: “Thus will I bless Thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in Thy name.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 104:33-34 – “I will sing unto Yahuah as long as I live: I will sing praise to my Elohiym while I have my being. My meditation of Him shall be sweet: I will be glad in Yahuah.”

Chazon (Revelation) 19:4-5 – “And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped Elohiym that sat on the throne, saying, Amein; Halle-lu-Yah. And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our Elohiym, all ye His servants, and ye that fear Him, both small and great.”
Reflection: We are to praise Elohiym at all times while we are in the land of the living and give all honour and glory to Him and Him alone.

Insights: Da’vid says that his soul is satisfied with all that Yahuah provides for him and that He is his help.
“5. My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise Thee with joyful lips: 6. When I remember Thee upon my bed, and meditate on Thee in the night watches. 7. Because Thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of Thy wings will I rejoice.”

Qiynah (Lamentations) 3:22-26 – “It is of Yahuah’s mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is Thy faithfulness. Yahuah is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in Him. Yahuah is good unto them that wait for Him, to the soul that seeketh Him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of Yahuah.”
Mattithyahu (Matthew) 26:41 – “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the ruach indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. ”

Reflection: Just as Da’vid knows, we should always know that our help comes from Yahuah and we can always find refuge in Him.
Verse 8: Following Elohiym Alone

The psalmist, Da’vid, transitions from a state of intense longing for Elohiym to finding contentment in Elohiym’s presence, declaring that Elohiym’s love is more valuable than life itself. Ultimately, the psalm is a testament to how a soul can find true and lasting satisfaction in Elohiym, leading to a lifelong commitment of praise and a confident hope in Elohiym’s justice against.
