Tehilliym (Psalms) 64
The psalmist’s complaint against the hurtful tongue of his enemy and his consolation that Elohiym will defend him.
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.
Introduction:
Tehilliym 64 is a psalm of Da’vid, likely written during a time of attack from secret plots. It begins with a prayer for protection from enemies who use their words like sharp swords and arrows to hurt the innocent. The psalm describes the wickeds deceitful and well-hidden schemes, while expressing Da’vid’s confidence that Elohiym will ultimately judge them and reveal their wickedness, leading the righteous to rejoice in His protection.
Tehilliym 64 (KJV-YS):
Verses 1-2: Praying to Elohiym
Insights: Da’vid calls for Elohiym to hear his prayer and to not let him be afraid of the enemy. He knows that only Elohiym can save him from the wicked and those who work iniquity.
“1. Hear my voice, O Elohiym, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy. 2. Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity:”
v-1: “Hear my voice, O Elohiym, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy.”
Qiynah (Lamentations) 3:55-56 – “I called upon Thy name, O Yahuah, out of the low dungeon. Thou hast heard my voice: hide not Thine ear at my breathing, at my cry. ”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 130:1-2 – “Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Yahuah. Yahuah, hear my voice: let Thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.”
Ma’asiym (Acts) 18:9-10 – “Then spake Yahuah to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city. And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of Elohiym among them.”
Reflection: No matter where we are in life, high or low, there is no place that Yahuah cannot hear our prayers and provide what we need as long as we are obedient to His commandments.
v-2: “Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity:”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 143:9 – “Deliver me, O Yahuah, from mine enemies: I flee unto Thee to hide me.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 32:2 – “And a Man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.”
Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 18:23 –“Yet, Yahuah, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from Thy sight, but let them be overthrown before Thee; deal thus with them in the time of Thine anger.”
Mattithyahu (Matthew) 26:3-4 – “Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, And consulted that they might take Yahusha by subtilty, and kill Him.”
Reflection: Da’vid continues to call on Yahuah to protect him from the secret counsel of those that work iniquity in rebellion against Elohiym. The wicked will always plot against those that guard the commandments of Yahuah and we have a hiding place in Mashiach Yahusha.
Verses 3-4: Lying Haters
Insights: Da’vid describes the lying words of the evil men that hate him as being like swords and arrows that they use on the righteous without thought of the damage they do.
“3. Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words: 4. That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.”
Cross References:
v-3: “Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words:”
Mishlei (Proverbs) 12:18 – “There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 54:17 – “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of Yahuah, and their righteousness is of Me, saith Yahuah.”
Ya’aqov (James) 3:6-8 – “And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.”
Reflection: The imagery of the evil person sharpening their treacherous and bitter tongue to use words to inflict severe damage to the righteous is like someone using a whetting stone to sharpen a sword. We, as followers of Mashiach, must always be very careful of the words we use and how we use them so that we don’t hurt people with our words like the evil person does.
v-4: “That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 11:2 – “For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart.”
Yochanon (John) 19:6 – “When the chief priests therefore and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, Crucify Him, crucify Him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye Him, and crucify Him: for I find no fault in Him.”
1st Kepha (Peter) 2:22-23 – “For even hereunto were ye called: because Mashiach also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow His steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth: Who, when He was reviled, reviled not again; when He suffered, He threatened not; but committed Himself to Him that judgeth righteously:”
Reflection: The words of the wicked are like arrows that they shoot in secret at the righteous but we are to be as Yahusha was, be very careful of our words so that we are not the wicked ones shooting hurtful words with our tongues.
Verses 5-6: Scheming to do Evil
Insights: The wicked encourage themselves to do evil by diligently seeking out how to do it so they will not get caught.
“5. They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them? 6. They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.”
Cross References:
v-5: “They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them?”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 10:11 – “He hath said in his heart, Elohiym hath forgotten: He hideth His face; He will never see it.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 140:5 – “The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.”
Chazon (Revelation) 11:10 – “And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.”
Reflection: Those who encourage each other to do wicked things in secret think that because people do not see them everything is okay with what they are doing.
v-6: “They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 5:9 – “For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 29:15 – “Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from Yahuah, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?”
Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 17:9-10 – “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I Yahuah search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.”
1st Qorintiym (Corinthians) 4:5 – “Therefore judge nothing before the time, until Yahuah come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of Elohiym.”
Reflection: The evil and wicked person seeks out how to accomplish sin. It is not something they do at face value, it is at their very core and deep within their heart with Elohiym alone knowing the true intentions of a person’s heart that we cannot judge.
Verses 7-8: Elohiym’s Vengeance
Insights: Da’vid knows that Elohiym will repay everyone for everything and will cause them to be wounded by their own tongue.
“7. But Elohiym shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded. 8. So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.”
Cross References:
v-7: “But Elohiym shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded.”
Devariym (Deuteronomy) 32:23 – “I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend Mine arrows upon them.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 7:12-13 – “If he turn not, He will whet His sword; He hath bent His bow, and made it ready. He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; He ordaineth His arrows against the persecutors.”
1st Tasloniqiym (Thessalonians) 5:2-3 – “For yourselves know perfectly that the day of Yahuah so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.”
Reflection: Yahuah Elohiym will have His vengeance one day soon and we all need to ensure we have it right with Him through His Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach or His arrows will pierce us through suddenly.
v-8: “So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 140:9 – “As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.”
Mishlei (Proverbs) 12:13 – “The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble.”
Mattithyahu (Matthew) 12:36-37 – “But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”
Luqas (Luke) 19:22 – “And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:”
Reflection: The wickedness of the tongue will always return to the sower of evil words, they will reap what they have said and everyone will see it.
Verses 9-10: All Will Fear Elohiym
Insights: Da’vid declares that everyone will fear Elohiym because of what He can do and the righteous will trust and be glad in Yahuah.
“9. And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of Elohiym; for they shall wisely consider of His doing. 10. The righteous shall be glad in Yahuah, and shall trust in Him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.”
Cross References:

Mattithyahu (Matthew) 10:28 – “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”
Reflection: The wise will always fear Yahuah Elohiym because they understand that this is the beginning of wisdom.
v-10: “The righteous shall be glad in Yahuah, and shall trust in Him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 32:11 – “Be glad in Yahuah, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.”
Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 9:23-24 – “Thus saith Yahuah, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth Me, that I am Yahuah which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith Yahuah.”
1st Qorintiym (Corinthians) 1:30-31 –“But of him are ye in Mashiach Yahusha, Who of Elohiym is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in Yahuah.”
Philippiym (Philippians) 4:4 – “Rejoice in Yahuah alway: and again I say, Rejoice.”
Reflection: The only thing that we can glory in is Yahuah and being obedient to Him through His Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach.
Conclusion:
Psalm 64 concludes with the assurance that Elohiym will judge the wicked, turning their own traps and words against them. It shifts from Da’vid’s prayer for protection to a confident declaration that the righteous will rejoice in Elohiym’s justice, see the downfall of their enemies, and take refuge in Him. The psalm’s conclusion encourages believers to praise Elohiym for His intervention, recognize His power, and trust in His ultimate triumph over evil.
