What do the Scriptures Say
About Celebrating Birthdays?
5th Day, Month 6, 11th
Thursday September 4th, 2025
Hello to all of my brothers and sisters in Mashiach Yahusha! I pray that this quick post finds you and your family in the health and strength of Yahuah.
I have received a few questions regarding this subject and wanted to provide a scriptural answer and what the Ruach Ha’Qodesh has revealed to me.
We all like to celebrate things and birthdays are no exception, but what do the scriptures have to say about celebrating birthdays? The scriptures plainly warn us to not practice the ways of the heathen but does this include birthday celebrations? The scriptures only mention the word birthday two times and that is in the account in Bere’shiyth 40 of Yoceph interpreting the chief butler and the chief bakers dreams which came true on Pharaoh’s birthday and the other mention of the word birthday is found in the account of Herod’s birthday party in Mattithyahu 14:6 and Marqus 6:21. In both of these accounts people are killed on the birthdays of these rulers. Does the fact that in both accounts people died mean that we aren’t supposed to celebrate birthdays? Is this the scriptural proof that we need to condemn birthday celebrations?
It would seem that is a good reason to not celebrate birthdays and something to add that would seem to support this is found in Qoheleth (Ecclesiastes) 7:1 where it says the day of death is better than the day of one’s birth. This pretty much sealed the deal for me and I threw celebrating birthdays into celebrating pagan holidays but this wasn’t all that Yahuah had to say to me about the subject.
A few years ago my birthday was approaching and my mom asked me what kind of cake I wanted for my birthday and I told her that she knows I don’t celebrate birthdays and she said she knows but she wasn’t doing it to celebrate for me, she was doing it to celebrate what Father Yahuah had done for her and my father all those years ago, and that was to bless them with their first child that they had been praying for many years to have… I couldn’t do anything but look at her, give her a big hug, cry and tell her a red velvet cake would be fine. It had never occurred to me that the day wasn’t just about me, for her it was celebrating the gift that they had desired to be blessed with and Father Yahuah had blessed them. They had completed part of the first commandment through my birth!
The scriptures are full of couples praying to have children and Tehilliym 127:3 says that children are an heritage of Yahuah and the fruit of the womb is His reward! The fruit of the womb is Yahuah’s reward and that is saying a lot within itself.
So after years of celebrating birthdays and then about six years of not celebrating birthdays, I have been celebrating birthdays for the past few years and will probably continue to celebrate the birthdays of those I love. I just celebrated my moms birthday with her on Monday. These celebrations are nothing extravagant or elaborate, I just celebrate the person’s birthday with them, tell them I love them and that I thank Father Yahuah for having them in my life.
I have even used moongiant.com to see what day of Yahuah’s month I was born on. You can go to the site and type in you birthday and year and it will tell you what sign of the moon you were born on and that is the day of the month you were born on according to Yahuah’s calendar.
I pray this quick post has answered your questions on what the scriptures say about celebrating birthdays and helps you in your walk with Yahuah and His Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach.
If you have a questions, send me a line and I’ll try my best to answer them from an Ivriy scriptural perspective and guidance from the Ruach Ha’Qodesh.
Shalom,
Minister Morrow
