The Gospel According to Marqus 5 (KJV-YS):
Introduction:
The fifth chapter of the Besorah of Marqus begins with Yahusha arriving on the other side of the sea from the closing of chapter four. There has been some minor debate as to if this was the Sea of Galilee or the Mediterranean Sea and that the account in Mattithyahu calls the inhabitants different names. The evidence seems to point to this was the other side of the Sea of Galilee and that the two different names given in the two accounts are names of the same group of people, who were in all probability members of the lost sheep of the house of Yashar’el.
On the other side, Yahusha continues His work of healing the sick and the casting out of unclean spirits (demons) from the man (men?).It appears He came to the other side with the sole purpose of freeing this man from Legion, the demonic infestation that had claimed this man’s life. Upon the healing of this man and casting the demons into the herd of swine, Yahusha and His group go back to the other side.
Arriving back on the other side, Yahusha is meet by many people before He even gets off the ship and one a ruler in the synagogue besought Him to come and heal his daughter for she was sick unto death. While He is going to the man’s house, the crowd is pressing against Him trying to get close to Him for various reasons. A woman with an issue of blood was among those in the crowd pressing against Him and she had the faith that if she could just touch the fringe of His garment, she would be made whole, and she was healed. Yahusha continues to the man’s house with the sick daughter only to be met by people saying she had already died. He then raises her from her sleep and commands them to tell no one and to get her something to eat.
Marqus 5: 1–20 – Yahusha Cast Legion into the Swine
Verses 1-6: Living Among the Dead
“1.And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. 2. And when He was come out of the ship, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3. Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: 4. Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. 5. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. 6. But when he saw Yahusha afar off, he ran and worshipped Him,”
Insights: The chapter opens up with Yahusha arriving to the other side of the sea to have a man with an unclean spirit come to meet Him and fall down before Him and worship Him.
Cross References Verses 1-6:
Vayiqra (Leviticus) 19:28 –“Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am Yahuah.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 66:4 –“All the earth shall worship Thee, and shall sing unto Thee; they shall sing to Thy name. Selah.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 65:3-5 –“A people that provoketh Me to anger continually to My face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick; Which remain among the graves, and lodge in the monuments, which eat swine’s flesh, and broth of abominable things is in their vessels; Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in My nose, a fire that burneth all the day.”
Philippiym (Philippians) 2:10-11 –“That at the name of Yahusha every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Yahusha Ha’Mashiach is Yahuah, to the glory of Elohiym the Father.”
Reflection: Yahusha has taken the disciples, and those who were closely following Him, to the other side of the sea to do nothing else besides cleanse this man of the unclean spirits. This man had evidently been crying out for Yahusha because immediately when He came out of the ship, the man met Him. How powerful is that! A man that couldn’t be bound with chains, overcomes the legion of demons to come and worship before Yahusha! I suspect that the demons would have went the other way because they knew that their day had come, the King had come to gather His lost sheep back to Him….
Verses 7-10: Introduction to Legion
7. And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Yahusha, thou Son of El Elyon (the most high God)? I adjure thee by Elohiym, that thou torment me not. 8. For He said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. 9. And He asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. 10. And he besought Him much that He would not send them away out of the country.
Insights: Yahusha tells the unclean spirits to come out of the man and they beg Him by Elohiym to not send them out of the country.
Cross References Verses 1-6:
Bere’shiyth (Genesis) 3:15 – “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 78:1-2 – “Say unto Elohiym, How terrible art Thou in Thy works! through the greatness of Thy power shall Thine enemies submit themselves unto Thee. ”
Chazon (Revelation) 12:10 – “And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our Elohiym, and the power of his Mashiach: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our Elohiym day and night.”
Reflection: The demons recognize that Yahusha is the Son of El Elyon and beg Him to not cast them out.
Verses 11-13: Devils Love Swine
11. Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. 12. And all the devils besought Him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. 13. And forthwith Yahusha gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.
Insights: The devils beg and plead with Yahusha to be cast into the herd of swine.
Cross References Verses 11-13:
Vayiqra (Leviticus) 11:7 – “And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you.”
Devariym (Deuteronomy) 14:8 – “And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase.”
1st Kepha (Peter) 5:8 – “ Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking את whom he may devour:”
Reflection: The combined group of over two thousand devils known as Legion were trying to find another way to survive and asked to be cast into the swine. The swine is an unclean animal and was never intended to be anything more than a scavenger/clean-up animal. The worship and sacrifice of swine to idols infested the northern tribes land and demonic possession was very prevalent then as it is now. We always have to be on guard of what we do and who we associate with and remember that we are not fighting flesh and blood, but the ones who have chosen to disobey Father Yahuah. They hate everything about us and will use any means at their disposal to attack or possess believers.
Verses 14-17: Unbelievers Reject Yahusha
14. And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done. 15. And they come to Yahusha, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. 16. And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine. 17. And they began to pray Him to depart out of their coasts.
Insights: The pig farmers couldn’t believe what they were witnessing and fled into the city to get reinforcements to confront Yahusha. When the reinforcements came and saw the possessed man clothed and in his right mind they were afraid also and prayed Yahusha to leave their coast.
Cross References Verses 1-6:
Shemoth (Exodus) 20:19 –“And they said unto Mosheh, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not Elohiym speak with us, lest we die. 20 And Mosheh said unto the people, Fear not: for Elohiym is come to prove you, and that His fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.”
1st Melekiym (Kings) 17:18 –“And she said unto Eliyahu, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of Elohiym? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?”
Iyov (Job) 21:14 – “Therefore they say unto Elohiym, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of Thy ways.”
1st Qorintiym (Corinthians) 2:14 – “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Ruah Elohiym: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
Reflection: The swine herders had just seen an incredible miracle and it scared them. Instead of seeing the beautiful miracle they saw the negative impact to their business. They weren’t happy for the man being healed, clothed and in his right mind, they were mad because they had just lost a bunch of money. They went to the city and told other people, possibly the owners of the swine that this man had just destroyed a bunch of food and cost them money. The people go to see and they were afraid as well because this Man had not only killed the herd of swine but he had tamed the man that chains couldn’t contain! They begged and prayed that He would leave their side of the sea and go back to where He came from.
Verses 18-20: The Call of the Saved
18. And when He was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed Him that he might be with Him. 19. Howbeit Yahusha suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things Yahuah hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. 20. And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Yahusha had done for him: and all men did marvel.”
Insights: With His mission accomplished, Yahusha prepares to go back to the other side but the healed man asks Him if he can come with Him and Yahusha tells him to stay and testify of what Yahuah has done for him.
Cross References Verses 1-6:
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 63:7 –“I will mention the lovingkindnesses of Yahuah, and the praises of Yahuah, according to all that Yahuah hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Yashar’el, which He hath bestowed on them according to His mercies, and according to the multitude of His lovingkindnesses.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 66:16-17 –“Come and hear, all ye that fear Elohiym, and I will declare what He hath done for my soul. I cried unto Him with my mouth, and He was extolled with my tongue.”
Yonah (Jonah) 2:2-3 – “And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto El-Yahuah, and He heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and Thou heardest my voice. For Thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all Thy billows and Thy waves passed over me.”
Yochanon (John) 4:29 – “Come, see a Man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this Ha’Mashiach?”
Reflection: The unnamed man wants to follow Yahusha but he is told to stay and tell others what Yahuah has done for him through Yahusha. What a story this man (men) must have told. We are not told how they were infested with the more than two thousand devils but we know that the man must have been crying out inside while the demons had control of his body. The cry was heard and Yahusha made a special trip to give the man salvation from the attack of an army of demons! Yahusha then tells the man to cry out and let others know about Yahuah’s Salvation.

Conclusion: The first part of the fifth chapter of the Besorah of Marqus marks a special journey for a man that had cried out to Him. The man was under attack by at least two thousand devils that Yahusha cast out of him into a herd of over two thousand swine. The removing of Legion from the an causes great fear and distress among the local people who ask Yahusha to leave. The man who was possessed asks Yahusha to be allowed to come with Him but Yahusha tells him to stay and tell everyone of the goodness of Yahuah’ Salvation.
