The Gospel According to Marqus 9 (KJV-YS): Part 2

Overall Introduction:

The ninth chapter of the Besorah of Marqus is a pivotal Brit Ha’dasha text that features Yahusha’s Transfiguration, where He is seen in radiant glory by Kepha, Ya’aqov, and Yochanon. The chapter also includes Yahusha’s confrontation with a demon-possessed boy and his father, His teachings on the importance of humility, the danger of leading others to sin, and His final teaching of the chapter, the greatest in the Kingdom of Elohiym is the servant of all.

Marqus 9:14-29 – Yahusha Heals a Possessed Boy

Insights: After returning from the transfiguration, Yahusha and His talmidiym find a large crowd around the other talmidiym with the scribes questioning them. When the people see the appearance of Yahusha, the brightness of His transfiguration, they are amazed and come running to greet Him. He goes directly to the scribes and ask them why are they harassing His talmidiym and a man from the crowd speaks up and says that he has brought his son to be healed from a demonic ruach who causes harm to the boy. The man explains that His talmidiym tried to cast the demon out but they were not successful. Mashiach then calls them a faithless generation and asks them how long He has to endure their unbelief before telling them to bring the boy to Him. The demon who knows it’s time is short tears the boy causing him to wallow on the ground with foam coming out his mouth. Yahusha asked the man how long had his son been like this and he says the boy has been that way since he was a child and that the ruach tries to kill the boy by throwing him in fire and water. The man at the end of his wits asks for Yahusha if He can do anything to please do it and have compassion on them. Yahusha then tells the man that if he believes, all things are possible and the man immediately cries out with tears in his eyes that he believes and to help him with what he doesn’t believe. To ensure everyone witnesses, Yahusha waits until the people come running and then He rebukes the evil ruach and commands it to come out of him and to return no more. The ruach cried out, cut him, then came out of the boy and those around thought that he was dead but Yahusha took him by the hand and lifted him up. After He came into the house with His talmidiym they asked Him why they couldn’t cast the demon out and Yahusha reveals to them that his kind can only be cast out by prayer and fasting.

“14. And when He came to his talmidiym, He saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them. 15. And straightway all the people, when they beheld Him, were greatly amazed, and running to Him saluted Him. 16. And He asked the scribes, What question ye with them?17. And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto Thee my son, which hath a dumb ruach; 18. And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to Thy talmidiym that they should cast him out; and they could not. 19. He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto Me. 20. And they brought him unto Him: and when he saw Him, straightway the ruach tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. 21. And He asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. 22. And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if Thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. 23. Yahusha said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. 24. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Adonai, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief. 25. When Yahusha saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the foul ruach, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf ruach, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. 26. And the ruach cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, he is dead. 27. But Yahusha took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose. 28. And when He was come into the house, His talmidiym asked Him privately, Why could not we cast him out? 29. And He said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.”

Cross References Verses 14-29:
v14:
“And when He came to his talmidiym, He saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them.”
Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 14:14
“Then Yahuah said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in My name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.”
Ivriym (Hebrews) 12:3 –
“For consider Him that endured such contradiction of sinners against Himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.”
Reflection:
The disciples weren’t ready for the interrogations of the unbelieving scribes and Pharisees yet. The scribes were likely calling the talmidiym false prophets because they couldn’t cast the demon out of the boy.

v15: “And straightway all the people, when they beheld Him, were greatly amazed, and running to Him saluted Him.”
Shemoth (Exodus) 34:30
“And when Aharon and all the children of Yashar’el saw Mosheh, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.”
Reflection:
Yahusha’s appearance was radiant as He had just been transfigured and the people were amazed at how brilliant He was.

v16: “And He asked the scribes, What question ye with them?”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 1:23 –
“Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.”
Luqas (Luke) 5:30-32 –
“But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against His talmidiym, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? And Yahusha answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
Reflection: The scribes and Pharisees always took the opportunity to attack Yahusha’s talmidiym because they could never win in their attacks against Him. Do not be discouraged when so called religious leaders question you on your faith and actions of your love for Father Yahuah and His Son Mashiach Yahusha and you can’t provide them with answers that are sufficient for them. Be encouraged that you are going through the same things the talmidiym went through and look at how they grew. Continue to grow your relationship with Yahuah no matter what anyone says.

v17: “And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto Thee my son, which hath a dumb ruach;”
Devariym (Deuteronomy) 32:16-18 –
“They provoked Him to jealousy with strange elohiym, with abominations provoked they Him to anger. They sacrificed unto devils, not to Elohiym; to elohiym whom they knew not, to new elohiym that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not. Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten Elohiym that formed thee.”
Marqus (Mark) 7:26 –
“The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought Him that He would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. ”
Reflection:
A man in the crowd who had heard enough of the bickering of the scribes spoke up to let Yahusha know what was going on and that he was the cause of it because he was seeking help for his son who had an evil ruach in him. The lands of the lost tribes of Yashar’el were infested with demons and people who were possessed by them. The man didn’t let the enemies tactics stop him from getting what he had came to get and we must likewise be persistent in what we seek from Yahuah.

v18: “And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to Thy talmidiym that they should cast him out; and they could not.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 36:8-9 –
“The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 57:19-20 –
“I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith Yahuah; and I will heal him. But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt.”
Yahudah (Jude) 1:13 –
“Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.”
Reflection:
Demonic possession causes people to display many nasty things and causes the person to inflict wounds to themselves. I can’t imagine what it must be like for someone to see someone they love go through this and especially if it is their child. The man was desperate so he asked Yahusha’s talmidiym to try and cast out the demon but they could not.

v19: “He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto Me.”
Bemidbar (Numbers) 14:11 –
“And Yahuah said unto Mosheh, How long will this people provoke Me? and how long will it be ere they believe Me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 78:21-22 –
“Therefore Yahuah heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Ya’aqov, and anger also came up against Yashar’el; Because they believed not in Elohiym, and trusted not in His salvation:”
Ivriym (Hebrews) 3:10-12 –
“Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known My ways. So I sware in My wrath, They shall not enter into My rest. Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living Elohiym.”
Reflection:
False prophets use this account when they try to heal someone and they can’t. They say it’s because the people don’t have enough faith, but this isn’t the reason at all, they are just counterfeits who are the ones themselves who don’t have the faith or authority from Yahuah to heal. Yahusha is grieved at the fact that the people don’t yet understand what He is doing and teaching them. We must ask Yahuah to give us a ruach of understanding of what He is trying to teach us and not harden our hearts and think we know everything.

v20: “And they brought him unto Him: and when he saw Him, straightway the ruach tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.”
Iyov (Job) 2:6 –
“And Yahuah said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.”
Marqus (Mark) 5:5 –
“And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.”
1st Kepha (Peter) 5:8 –
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:”
Reflection:
When they brought him to Yahusha, the demon was probably trying to get away so it wouldn’t be cast out or it was inflicting it’s last bit of damage to the boy before it was exorcised.

v21: “And He asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 51:5 –
“Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 58:3 –
“The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.”
Yochanon (John) 9:1
“And as Yahusha passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.”
Ma’asiym (Acts) 14:8 –
“And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother’s womb, who never had walked:”
Reflection:
Yahusha knew how long the boy had been like this but he wanted the father to say it. It may have been to bring attention to something that may have happened during that time to cause the demon to possess the boy and it needed to be recognized by the man.

v22: And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if Thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.”
Daniy’el (Daniel) 3:16 –
“If it be so, our Elohiym whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.”
Yonah (Jonah) 1:15 –
“So they took up Yonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.”
Shemoth (Exodus) 34:6-7
“And Yahuah passed by before him, and proclaimed, Yahuah, Yahuah El, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 103:8-10 –
“Yahuah is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. He will not always chide: neither will He keep His anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.”
Reflection:
The man explains how it affects the boy and tries to harm and even kill him. He then pleads with Yahusha that if He can do anything, to have compassion on them and help them because he knows that Yahusha has understanding of their situation.

v23: Yahusha said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 31:23 –
“O love Yahuah, all ye His saints: for Yahuah preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the excellent doer.”
Mishlei (Proverbs) 3:5-6 –
“Trust in Yahuah with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”
Ivriym (Hebrews) 11:6 –
“But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to Elohiym must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.”
Reflection:
Yahusha tells the man that all things are possible for those who have faith and are obedient to Yahuah.

v.24: And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Adonai, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 126:5 –
“They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 41:10 –
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy Elohiym: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the Right Hand of My righteousness.”
Ivriym (Hebrews) 12:2 –
“Looking unto Yahusha the Author and Finisher of our faith; Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of Elohiym.”
Reflection:
The cleansing of the soul is through the shedding of tears. The man cleansed his soul by acknowledging his sin of unbelief, then he asked Yahusha to help him because his belief may not be strong enough and he confesses it all to Mashiach just as we should do when we seek things from Him.

v.27: “But Yahusha took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 41:13 –
“For I Yahuah Elohaynu will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 139:10 –
“Even there shall Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold me.”
Marqus (Mark) 1:41 –
“And Yahusha, moved with compassion, put forth His hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.”
Reflection:
The loving Shepherd is always there to take us by the hand and lift us up, all we have to do is take His hand and get back up. The right hand of Yahuah is not only strong but it is tender and full of grace and mercy to lift us out of the miry clay.

v.28: “And when He was come into the house, His talmidiym asked Him privately, Why could not we cast him out?”
Devariym (Deuteronomy) 3:22 –
“Ye shall not fear them: for Yahuah Elohayka He shall fight for you.”
Luqas (Luke) 4:12-13 –
“And Yahusha answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt Yahuah Elohaykem And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from Him for a season.”
Yahudah (Jude) 1:9 –
“Yet Miyka’el the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Mosheh, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, Yahuah rebuke thee.”
Reflection:
The talmidiym thought that they could defeat the evil ruach in their own strength and couldn’t understand why they had been defeated.

v.29: “And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.”
Daniy’el (Daniel) 9:3 – “And I set my face unto Yahuah Elohiym, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:”
Mattithyahu (Matthew) 4:2-3 & 11-
“And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. – 11. Then the devil leaveth Him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto Him.”
Eph’siym (Ephesians) 6:18 –
“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Ruach, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”
Reflection:
In order for us to battle the enemy, we have to turn it all the way over to Yahuah by feeding the ruach of Yahuah inside of us and not the ruach of the world. Fasting and prayer is the best way to submit and turn it all over to Yahuah and let Him provide for us during the fast and after the fast when we are on the battle field.

Marqus 9:30-32 – Yahusha Reveals His Death and Resurrection

Insights: As Yahusha and His talmidiym continue their journeys back and forth through Galilee and the surrounding areas, He desired for no one to know so He could reveal in secret what must soon happen to Him so that they would remember that He had told them before it happened.

“30. And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and He would not that any man should know it. 31. For He taught his talmidiym, and said unto them, The Son of A’dam is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill Him; and after that He is killed, He shall rise the third day. 32. But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask Him.”

Cross References Verses 14-29:
v.30: “And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and He would not that any man should know it.”
Devariym (Deuteronomy) 29:29 –
“The secret things belong unto Yahuah Elohaynu: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this Torah.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 119:11 –
“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.”
Daniy’el (Daniel) 12:4 –
“But thou, O Daniy’el, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.”
Reflection:
The crowds were always seeking after Yahusha during His journeys in and around Galilee, the land of the lost sheep of Yashar’el, and He needed time to Himself and to teach His talmidiym in private. Yahuah always wants to have a private and intimate relationship with those who seek to be close to Him and this was the case here. Yahuah desires to share His secret things with us if we seek and guard them diligently.

v31: “For He taught his talmidiym, and said unto them, The Son of A’dam is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill Him; and after that He is killed, He shall rise the third day.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 22:16 –
“For dogs have compassed Me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed Me: they pierced My hands and My feet. ”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 53:5 –
“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.”
Yochanon (John) 3:14
“And as Mosheh lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of A’dam be lifted up:”
Yochanon (John) 10:17-18 “Therefore doth My Father love Me, because I lay down My life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of My Father.”
Reflection:
Yahusha teaches His talmidiym that He will soon be handed over to corrupt men, just as most of the prophets of Yahuah are and that these corrupt and evil men would kill Him. He then tells them that after they kill Him, He will rise to life again on the third day because He laid down His life for us and has the right to take it to Him again.

v32: “But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask Him.”
Mishlei (Proverbs) 3:5-6 –
“Trust in Yahuah with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”
Yochanon (John) 12:16 – “These things understood not His talmidiym at the first: but when Yahusha was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things unto Him.”
Reflection:
The talmidiym didn’t understand what Yahusha was telling them to prepare them for the things that He was going to have to go through. They had seen all of the miracles He had done and knew the power that He held in His hands so they couldn’t understand how any of this could happen but they were looking at it through the flesh and didn’t realize the ruach implications of what He had to do. They didn’t understand but they didn’t ask for understanding on the matter either.
