The Epistle to the Eph’siym 1 (KJV-YS): Part 1

Overall Introduction:

Eph’siym (Ephesians) chapter 1 is a declaration of praise for Elohiym the Father and His Son Mashiach Yahusha, that establishes the believer’s identity, calling, and purpose in Mashiach. Pa’al emphasizes that redemption, adoption, and inheritance are not earned, but are from the eternal will of Yahuah, determined before the foundation of the world. These blessings are given through Yahusha Ha’Mashiach and are intended for the praise of Yahuah’s glory, revealing a covenant plan that was not fully understood until it had been accomplished through Mashiach’s life, death and resurrection.

The chapter presents the assembly of the called-out believers as a people brought into unity under the renewed covenant through Mashiach, Who is exalted above all rule and authority and appointed as Head over all things. Pa’al closes with a prayer that believers would receive wisdom and revelation, gaining understanding of the hope of their calling, the richness of their inheritance, and the greatness of Yahuah’s power at work in them, grounding their faith in covenant identity rather than prideful entitlement.

Eph’siym 1:1-2 – Opening Salutation

Insights: The chapter starts with Pa’al introducing himself to the qodeshiym (saints) at Ephesus who are faithful in the works of Mashiach, praying for their grace and peace from the Father and Son Yahuah.

“1. Pa’al, an apostle of Yahusha Ha’Mashiach by the will of Elohiym, to the qodeshiym (saints) which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Mashiach Yahusha: 2. Grace be to you, and peace, from Elohiym our Father, and from Master Yahusha Ha’Mashiach.”

Cross References Verses 1-2:
v1:
“Pa’al, an apostle of Yahusha Ha’Mashiach by the will of Elohiym, to the qodeshiym (saints) which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Mashiach Yahusha:”
Bemidbar (Numbers) 12:7-8 –
“My servant Mosheh is not so, who is faithful in all Mine house. With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of Yahuah shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Mosheh?”
Devariym (Deuteronomy) 7:9 –
“Know therefore that Yahuah Elohayka, He is Elohiym, the faithful Elohiym, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations;”
Mattithyahu (Matthew) 25:21
“His master said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy master.”
Romaiym (Romans) 1:1 –
“Pa’al, a servant of Yahusha Ha’Mashiach, called to be an apostle, set apart unto the besorah of Elohiym,”
Chazon (Revelation) 2:9-10
“I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Yahudiym, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”
Reflection: In his opening statement to the Eph’siym, Pa’al tells that he is an apostle of Yahusha Ha’Mashiach. An apostle is just a person who has been sent out to do the work of Mashiach, which is the same work He went out to do, and that is to be a servant to Father Yahuah and to do His will, which is to be the servant to those we are sent to, to help them in their walk of obedience to Father Yahuah. Remember, the title’s (pastor, apostle, teacher, etc.) in Yahuah’s Kingdom mean that you are even more of a servant than others, the last will be first in His Kingdom.

v2:
“Grace be to you, and peace, from Elohiym our Father, and from Master Yahusha Ha’Mashiach.”
Bere’shiyth (Genesis) 6:8 –“But Noach found grace in the eyes of Yahuah.”
Shemoth (Exodus) 34:6-7
“And Yahuah passed by before him, and proclaimed,Yahuah, Yahuah El, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”
Ivriym (Hebrews) 4:16 –
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
Ya’aqov(James) 4:6-7 –
“But He giveth more grace. Wherefore He saith, Elohiym resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to Elohiym. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Reflection: True grace and peace can only come from Father Elohiym through His Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach and we are to be the earthen vessels it flows through here by allowing Them to use us for Their will and purpose. This is the opening prayer Pa’al prays for the Eph’siym in his greeting, that they experience the true grace and peace of Yahuah.

Eph’siym 1:3-14 – The Beautiful and Blessed Will of Elohiym

Insights: Pa’al continues his letter by praising Elohiym for the spiritual blessings He has bestowed upon us in the heavenly places through His Son Mashiach Yahusha, which were from the foundation of the world, by choosing us to be set-apart according to His perfect plan and will. We were predestined to adoption into the family of faith, the called-out assembly of the body of believers in Mashiach Yahusha, to have an inheritance of eternal life through the blood of the renewed covenant, guaranteed by the love of obedience we show, in the understanding of us guarding His commandments. By us hearing the Word of Truth and obeying it unto the salvation of our souls, Ruach Ha’Qodesh seals us against the day of Yahuah’s wrath so that His possession, purchased by the shed blood of Yahusha Ha’Mashiach, may be redeemed for the praise of His glory!

v5: “Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Yahusha Ha’Mashiach to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,”
Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 1:4-5 –
“Then the Word of Yahuah came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”
Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 29:11 –
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith Yahuah, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
Yochanon (John) 1:12-13
“But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of Elohiym, even to them that believe on His name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of Elohiym.”
Romayim (Romans) 8:28-31 –
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love Elohiym, to them who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son, hat He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He did predestinate, them He also called: and whom He called, them He also justified: and whom He justified, them He also glorified. What shall we then say to these things? If Elohiym be for us, who can be against us?”
1stYochanon (John) 3:1-2
“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of Elohiym: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew Him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of Elohiym, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is.”
Reflection: The plan of salvation has been laid out from the foundation of the world and everything has been predestined for the glory and praise of Elohiym the Father. We do not know what His eternal will is and therefore it is up to us to work out and seek our salvation with all due diligence so that we may be found acceptable to Him. Even though we are predestined to either serve Father Yahuah or rebel against Him, we still have the choice of free will to do whatever our heart desires..

v6:
“To the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein He hath made us accepted in the Beloved.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 60:4-5 –
“Thou hast given a banner to them that fear Thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah. That Thy beloved may be delivered; save with Thy right hand, and hear me.”
Mishlei (Proverbs) 8:30-31 –
“Then I was by Him, as one brought up with Him: and I was daily His delight, rejoicing always before Him; Rejoicing in the habitable part of His earth; and My delights were with the sons of men.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 42:1
“Behold My Servant, whom I uphold; Mine elect, in whom My soul delighteth; I have put My Ruach upon Him: He shall bring forth judgment to the nations.”
Philippiym (Philippians) 4:19 –
“But my Elohiym shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Mashiach Yahusha.”
Reflection:
The only way we can be accepted by Father Yahuah is through the grace provided by His beloved Son Mashiach Yahusha.

v7: “In Whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace;”
Shemoth (Exodus) 34:7
“Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 130:6-7 – “Let Yashar’el hope in Yahuah: for with Yahuah there is mercy, and with Him is plenteous redemption. And He shall redeem Yashar’el from all his iniquities.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 43:25
“I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for Mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.”
Yonah (Jonah) 4:2
“And he prayed unto Yahuah, and said, I pray Thee, O Yahuah, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that Thou art a gracious Elohiym, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest Thee of the evil.”
Romayim (Romans) 3:23-25 –“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of Elohiym; Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in MashiachYahusha: Whom Elohiym hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of Elohiym;”
Qolasiym (Colossians) 1:12-14 – “Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the qodeshiym (saints) in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the Kingdom of His dear Son: In Whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins:”
Reflection: There is nothing that we can do or have done that provides us with redemption and forgiveness of our sins. It is only by the grace of Elohiym through His Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach and the precious blood He shed for us that we are redeemed and forgiven of our sins and transgressions against Yahuah.

v8:
“Wherein He hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 104:24 –
“O Yahuah, how manifold are Thy works! in wisdom hast Thou made them all: the earth is full of Thy riches.”
Mishlei (Proverbs) 8:12-14 –
“I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions. The fear of Yahuah is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. Counsel is Mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 52:13
“Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently, He shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.”
Qolasiym (Colossians) 2:3 –
“In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
Reflection: True wisdom only comes from Elohiym and through His perfect will He has given us an overflowing fountain of grace and mercy.

v11: “In Whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of Him who worketh all things after the counsel of His own will:”
Devariym (Deuteronomy) 4:20 –
“But Yahuah hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Mitsrayim, to be unto Him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day.”
Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 40:13-14
“Who hath directed the Ruach of Yahuah, or being His counsellor hath taught Him? With whom took He counsel, and who instructed Him, and taught Him in the path of judgment, and taught Him knowledge, and shewed to Him the way of understanding?”
Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 23:18-20 –
“For who hath stood in the counsel of Yahuah, and hath perceived and heard His Word? who hath marked His Word, and heard it? Behold, a whirlwind of Yahuah is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked. The anger of Yahuah shall not return, until He have executed, and till He have performed the thoughts of His heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly.”
Ma’asiym (Acts) 20:32 –
“And now, brethren, I commend you to Elohiym, and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.”
Romayim (Romans) 11:33-36 –
“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of Elohiym! how unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of Yahuah? or who hath been His counsellor? Or who hath first given to Him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of Him, and through Him, and to Him, are all things: to Whom be glory for ever. Amein.”
Reflection: Through the renewed marriage covenant, our inheritance has been restored, and we have access to all the promises Yahuah made to the fathers of the faith. It is the working of Yahuah’s will, not our own, that He has predestined us to this glorious and beautiful gift of salvation and inheritance through His Son Mashiach Yahusha.

v12: “That we should be to the praise of His glory, who first trusted in Mashiach.”
Bere’shiyth (Genesis) 15:6 –
“And he believed in Yahuah; and He counted it to him for righteousness.”
Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 23:6 –
“In His days Yahudah shall be saved, and Yashar’el shall dwell safely: and this is His name whereby He shall be called, Yahuah Tsidqenu (our righteousness).”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 2:11-12 –
“Serve Yahuah with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and ye perish from the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in Him.”
Yochanon (John) 8:56
“Your father Avraham rejoiced to see My day: and he saw it, and was glad.”
Reflection: Only through our trust and faith in Father Yahuah through Mashiach Yahusha can we attain to be the praise of His glory.

v13:
“In Whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the Word of Truth, the besorah (gospel) of your yeshu’ah (salvation): in Whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Ruach Ha’Qodesh of promise,”
Tehilliym (Psalms) 51:11 –
“Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Ruach Ha’Qodesh from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy yeshu’ah (salvation); and uphold me with Thy free Ruach. Then will I teach transgressors Thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto Thee. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O Elohiym, thou Elohiym of my yeshu’ah (salvation): and my tongue shall sing aloud of Thy righteousness.”
Yo’el (Joel) 2:28-30 –
“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My Ruach upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out My Ruach. And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.”
2nd Qorintiym (Corinthians) 1:21-22 –
“Now He which stablisheth us with you in Mashiach, and hath anointed us, is Elohiym; Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Ruach in our hearts.”
Ya’aqov(James) 1:18 –
“Of His own will begat He us with the Word of Truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.”
Reflection: Only by the Set-apart Ruach of Father and Son Yahuah are we even able to begin to have faith and through Their Ruach, we are sealed into the promise of salvation through redemption.

v14: “Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory.”
Devariym (Deuteronomy) 32:9 –
“For Yahuah’s portion is His people; Ya’aqov is the lot of His inheritance.”
Devariym (Deuteronomy) 33:4 –
“Mosheh commanded us a Torah, even the inheritance of the congregation of Ya’aqov.”
Romayim (Romans) 8:14-17 & 23-24 –
“For as many as are led by the Ruach of Elohiym, they are the sons of Elohiym. For ye have not received the ruach of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Ruach of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Ruach itself beareth witness with our ruach, that we are the children of Elohiym: And if children, then heirs; heirs of Elohiym, and joint-heirs with Mashiach; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together. & 23. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Ruach, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?”
Galatiym (Galatians) 4:6-7 –
“And because ye are sons, Elohiym hath sent forth the Ruach of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of Elohiym through Mashiach.”
Reflection: Our faith and trust is the substance of our inheritance until the glorious day when Yahusha Ha’Mashiach redeems us, the possession purchased by His blood, and we are with Him in His Kingdom.

Overall Reflection of Eph’siym Chapter 1 – Part 1:

Pa’al greets the called-out assembly in Ephesus by explaining who he is and that he is representing Yahusha Ha’Mashiach. He prays for the Eph’siym grace and peace from Elohiym the Father through His Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach. Pa’al states boldly that it was because Elohiym chose His called-out assembly, the body of believers that make up the body of Mashiach Yahusha, from the foundation of the world and that it was not anything that we have done on our own but only through Mashiach do we have yeshu’ah (salvation) and redemption to be set-apart before Him for His Own pleasure which He purposed in Himself. Pa’al teaches that all set-apart things in heaven and on earth will be re-united through Ruach Elohiym to be one within Mashiach and His called-out assembly because Father Yahuah is always true to His Word that proceeds out of His mouth and that it has all been predestined from the foundation of the creation, not because of anything we have done but it is all for Elohiym the Father’s glory and praise.

Study & Self-Reflection Questions Eph’siym Chapter 1, Part 1

1. Eph’siym 1:1–2 — Calling, Identity, and Peace
“Pa’al, an apostle of Yahusha Ha’Mashiach by the will of Elohiym… Grace be to you, and peace, from Elohiym our Father, and from the Master Yahusha Ha’Mashiach.”

Pa’al begins by establishing authority not through position, but through the will of Elohiym, and addresses the assembly as set-apart and faithful.
→ Why does Pa’al ground his calling in the will of Elohiym rather than personal qualification?
→ What does it mean to be both “set-apart” and “faithful” in everyday life?
→ How do grace and peace function as covenant gifts rather than mere greetings?

2. Eph’siym 1:3–6 — Chosen and Adopted
“Blessed be the Elohiym and Father of our Master Yahusha Ha’Mashiach, Who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings… According as He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world…”

Pa’al frames election and adoption as acts rooted in Yahuah’s purpose and love, not human merit.
→ What does being “chosen… before the foundation of the world” reveal about Yahuah’s plan?
→ How does adoption reshape the way we understand relationship with Yahuah?
→ Why is set-apartness presented here as a result of being chosen, not the cause?

3. Eph’siym 1:7–10 — Redemption and Purpose
“In Whom we have redemption through His blood… Having made known unto us the mystery of His will…”

Redemption is tied to forgiveness, wisdom, and the revealing of Yahuah’s will, centered in Mashiach.
→ How does redemption through blood connect this passage to earlier covenant patterns?
→ What does Pa’al mean by “the mystery of His will”?
→ How does understanding Yahuah’s purpose affect the way we live faithfully?

4. Eph’siym 1:11–12 — Inheritance and Hope
“In Whom also we have obtained an inheritance… that we should be to the praise of His glory…”

Inheritance language echoes covenant promises, land, and sonship found throughout the Scriptures.
→ Why is inheritance described as something already obtained, yet still hoped for?
→ How does being “to the praise of His glory” shape our purpose as a people?
→ In what ways does this passage shift focus from individual gain to communal calling?

5. Eph’siym 1:13–14 — Sealed by the Ruach
“After that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Ruach Ha’Qodesh of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance…”

The Ruach is presented as a seal and guarantee, marking belonging and future fulfillment.
→ What does it mean to be sealed, rather than merely instructed or inspired?
→ How does the Ruach function as an “earnest” or pledge of what is to come?
→ How should assurance of inheritance influence obedience and faithfulness now?

Concluding Reflection
→ How does Eph’siym 1:1–14 reshape your understanding of identity, purpose, and calling?
→ In what ways does this passage call you to live more intentionally as one set apart in Mashiach?
→ How can remembering Yahuah’s eternal purpose guard against discouragement or pride?
