Mark 1

Introduction:

Mark’s Gospel was written around 60 A.D., primarily for a Gentile audience, specifically Romans. This is evident in Mark’s explanations of Jewish customs, which were included to help those unfamiliar with Hebrew culture understand the context of Yahusha’s teachings and actions.

As we study the Gospel according to Mark, we will see how the life, teachings, miracles, death, and resurrection of Yahusha Ha’Mashiach were all foretold in the Old Testament. Moreover, we will acknowledge that Yahusha upheld the Torah (Law) and the Prophets, demonstrating that He neither broke, changed, nor abolished them.

The Gospel According to Mark 1 Verses 1 through 20 (KJV-YS):

Verses 1-3: Opening Declaration

“1. The beginning of the gospel of Yahusha Ha’Mashiach, the Son of Elohiym; 2. As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send My messenger before Thy face, which shall prepare Thy way before Thee. 3. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.”

Theme: Preparation for Yahusha’s Ministry

The opening verses of the first chapter establish the divinely ordained mission of Yahusha Ha’Mashiach. It declares His identity as the Son of Elohiym and emphasizes the fulfillment of prophetic scripture through the preparation for His first coming.

Cross References:

Mal’aki (Malachi) 3:1 – “Behold, I will send My messenger, and he shall prepare the way before Me: and Yahuah, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to His temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, He shall come, saith Yahuah Tseva’oth.”

Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 40:3 – “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of Yahuah, make straight in the desert a highway for our Elohiym.”

Summary: The chapter begins with a declaration of the “good news” of Yahusha Ha’Mashiach, the Son of Elohiym. Prophecies from Mal’aki (Malachi) 3:1 and Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 40:3 are fulfilled through the ministry of Yochanan the Immerser (John the Baptist), who prepares the way for Yahusha.

Verses 4-8: The Ministry of John the Baptist (AKA Yochanan the Immerser)

Theme: Preparation Through Repentance – These verses highlight the ministry of Yochanan the Immerser (John the Baptist) as the forerunner of Yahusha Ha’Mashiach. His call to repentance prepared the hearts of the people for the coming of the Messiah. Yochanan’s humility and focus on Yahusha set the stage for Yahusha’s greater mission, emphasizing the transformative power of the Ruach Ha’Qodesh (Holy Ghost).

Cross References:
Mal’aki (Malachi) 4:5-6 “5. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of Yahuah: 6. And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.”

Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 1:16-17 “16. Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before Mine eyes; cease to do evil; 17. Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.”

Yo’el (Joel) 2:28-29 “28. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29. And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out My Spirit.”

Summary: In this passage, the Gospel of Mark introduces Yochanan the Immerser as the messenger prophesied to prepare the way for Yahusha. Yochanan’s baptism of repentance served as a spiritual cleansing, symbolizing the readiness to receive the Messiah. His message pointed to Yahusha, who would baptize not with water but with the Ruach Ha’Qodesh, bringing transformation and renewal to one’s heart and soul.

Verses 9-11: The Baptism of Yahusha

“9. And it came to pass in those days, that Yahusha came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in the Jordan. 10. And straightway coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opened, and the Ruach (Spirit) like a dove descending upon Him: 11. And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Theme: Yahusha’s Identity Affirmed – The baptism of Yahusha marks the beginning of His public ministry. This event reveals Yahusha’s divine identity through the visible descent of the Ruach Ha’Qodesh and the audible voice of Yahuah proclaiming Yahusha as His Son.

Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 42:1 – “Behold My Servant, whom I uphold; Mine Elect, in whom My soul delighteth; I have put My Spirit upon Him: He shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.”

Summary:
Yahusha’s baptism signifies His role as the chosen servant of Yahuah. His baptism was not for the remission of His sins, as He was sinless (Hebrews 4:15), but to fulfill Yahuah’s plan, identify with humanity, inaugurate His ministry, and set an example for believers. It marked a pivotal moment in the history of salvation, pointing to His ultimate sacrifice, resurrection and the new life He offers to all who follow Him as their Master.

Verses 12-13: Yahusha in the Wilderness

“12. And immediately the Ruach driveth Him into the wilderness. 13. And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Ha’Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto Him.”

Theme: Preparation and Victory Over Temptation – Yahusha’s time in the wilderness represents both His preparation for ministry and His triumph over Ha’Satan. It highlights His role as the second A’dam, overcoming where the first A’dam fell.

Cross References:

Bere’shiyth (Genesis) 3:1 “Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which Yahuah Elohiym had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath Elohiym said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

Devariym (Deuteronomy) 8:3 – “And He humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that He might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of Yahuah doth man live.”

Tehilliym (Psalms) 91:11-12 – “12. For He shall give His angels charge over Thee, to keep Thee in all Thy ways. 13. They shall bear Thee up in their hands, lest Thou dash Thy foot against a stone.”

Verses 16-20: Calling the First Disciples

“16. Now as He walked by the sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. 17. And Yahusha said unto them, Come ye after Me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. 18. And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed Him.
19. And when He had gone a little farther thence, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets. 20. And straightway He called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after Him.”
