Praying for the Removal of Generational Curses
Greetings to my brothers and sisters in the faith, those who love Father Yahuah and His Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach, who choose to walk in the way of truth and guard covenant with Yahuah Elohaynu!
I pray that you have enjoyed the blessings of grace and peace from Father Yahuah this week and that you are looking forward to His Shabbath tomorrow as much as I am!
Introduction
From the original sin of A’dam and Chuah, humanity has had to live with the consequences and repercussions of that sin which has been passed down to all of their descendants right up to the present day of you and I. Because of their transgression of the first commandment, the seeds of their unfruitfulness of disobedience were sown in each and everyone of us. For clarification, we are either fruitful to the commandments of Yahuah, which bring life and blessings, or we are unfruitful to His commandments, wherein we become fruitful to the enemy and his plan of rebellion against Father Yahuah, which brings death and curses.
We can see the consequences of being unfruitful for Yahuah and being fruitful for the enemy in the disobedience of eating of the fruit that was commanded to not be eaten:
Bere’shiyth (Genesis) 3:16-19 – “Unto the woman He said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. And unto A’dam He said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it was thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”
** Because of A’dam’s and Chuah’s disobedience, we can see these curses in our everyday life:
1. Women’s sorrows are multiplied in their lives because of life in general and by their children, the worry over their children’s life and health, and their sorrows and pains during childbirth.
2. Men’s sorrows are multiplied in our lives and increase when we have difficulty providing for our families because the ground that we work doesn’t bring forth the abundance it was originally supposed to, it brings forth evil instead of good (thorns and thistles) and we have to work harder than we would have had to originally, just to make ends meet.
3. We all die, our bodies return to the earth from where it was taken, the ruach returns to Yahuah from Whom it was given and our souls either rest in peace waiting for Mashiach Yahusha to return or our souls wait in torments until the day of Father Yahuah’s judgement.
The original curses that were placed on the first couple directly pass through our fathers to all of us, and as long as we are in this flesh, those curses will be upon us and I haven’t found anywhere that says they can be removed, only that they can be lessened through obedience. These curses were also directly passed to A’dam and Chuah’s children, Qayin and H’avel, causing the first murder and the extra generational curses to begin. The extra generational curses are able to be removed from us and this is what we will focus on in this study.
What are Generational Curses
The term “generational curses” or something similar cannot be found in the scriptures but it is a term that can be understood if we break it down and look at the Hebrew words for both generation and curse:
דּוֹר (dor) is the word for generation in Hebrew which is SHW 1755 and is defined as a revolution of time, i.e. an age or generation. In the Tanakh, the word dor occurs about 167 times; as many as 74 of these are in the repetition “dor plus dor”, meaning “always”. The first occurrence of the word is in Bere’shiyth 6:9 telling of the generations of Noach and that he was a just man and perfect in his generations. The concrete meaning of generation is the period of time during which people live. Yahuah tells Noach to come into the ark because He had seen Noach’s righteousness before Him in that generation. A generation may be described as perverse and crooked (Devariym 32:5) or righteous because of their fear of Elohiym (Tehilliym 14:5).
**From the above we see that the word generation is the time of a persons life and with the suffix “al” is the directional flow of time from one person to their offspring’s life.
אָרַר (arar) is the word for curse in Hebrew and is the one that we will look at in this study and it is SHW 779 and is a primitive root defined as – to execrate (to declare evil upon something) which is to curse bitterly. The first occurrence of this word is found in Bere’shiyth 3:14 where Elohiym curses the serpent above all cattle and every beast and then it is used again in Bere’shiyth 3:17 where Elohiym curses the ground because A’dam broke the eternal covenant. This form of arar accounts for over half of the occurrences found in the Tanakh and it is the pronouncement of judgement on those who break covenant with Yahuah as: “Cursed is the man who…” (Devariym 27:15-26). “Curse” is usually parallel with “bless”. The two curses in Bere’shiyth 3 are in bold contrast to the blessings in Bere’shiyth 1:28 where Elohiym blesses them and commands them to “be fruitful” or to guard covenant with Yahuah.
There are several scriptures that reinforce the blessings and curses for guarding covenant with Yahuah:
Bere’shiyth (Genesis) 12:3 – “And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”
** Yahuah promises to bless those who bless Avraham and curse those that curse him because he chose to obey Yahuah and guard covenant with Him.
We can see the full ramifications of the blessings and cursings laid out near the end of Torah:
Devariym (Deuteronomy) 28:1-2 & 16 – “And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of Yahuah Elohayka, to observe and to do all His commandments which I command thee this day, that Yahuah Elohayka will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of Yahuah Elohayka. & 16. But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of Yahuah Elohayka, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:”
** Mosheh tells the children of Yashar’el that if they obey the commandments of Yahuah they will be blessed but if they don’t they will be cursed. The list of blessings go from verse 3 to 14 and the curses go from verses 16 to 68! Let that one sink in!!
Now that we have the definitions out of the way, let’s get an understanding of what generational curses are. Generational curses are curses that follow a family from one generation to the next, passed down through the fathers only:
Shemoth (Exodus) 20:5 – “Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Yahuah Elohayka am a jealous El, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me;“
** The iniquity is the evil we do towards Yahuah by breaking covenant and transgressing His commandments. He returns our transgressions to us and to our children after us because we have chosen to serve or put something above Him in our lives and not love Him the way He desires us to love Him. People think they can love Yahuah in the way they want to but there is only one way to love Yahuah and everything else says that you hate Him.
Some critics of generational curses say that we are all responsible for our own soul salvation, that the children are not punished for the father’s sins, the father is not punished for the children’s sins and that generational curses do not exist.
We are responsible for our own salvation:
Philippiym (Philippians) 2:12-13 – “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is Elohiym which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.“
**So yes, this is true.
The children are not punished for the father’s sins:
Yechezq’el (Ezekiel) 18:20 – “The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.“
**So yes, this is true also.
So if we have to work out our own salvation and the fathers and sons do not bear the iniquity of each other, then where do generational curses come in? Great question so lets get on to it!
Scriptures on Removing Generational Curses
Before we get into the scriptures directly on removing generational curses, lets back up and look at that verse in Yechezq’el that seems to disprove generational curses and put it into the proper context:
Yechezq’el (Ezekiel) 18:19-22 – “Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is Lawful and right, and hath kept אֶת all My statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live. The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all My statutes, and do that which is Lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.“
**When we look at the verse in context, in fact the entire chapter, we can see that this is a question that is being asked “Why? does the son not bear the iniquity of the father?” and the answer is given. The son doesn’t bear the iniquity of the father if he chooses to that which is Lawful and right, he will not bear the iniquity of his fathers! Maybe you can see where this is going but if not, continue to follow along. The entire 18th chapter is focused on the longsuffering grace and mercy of Yahuah that none should perish but that all come to repentance and this is how the generational curses are broken, by guarding covenant with Father Yahuah and walking in His way
With that small but significant clarification out of the way, lets get into the scriptures that tell us specifically how to remove the generational curses of our father’s sins.
The first is found directly after the verse in Shemoth 20:5 that promises the curses to be placed upon the children to third and fourth generations:
Shemoth (Exodus) 20:6 – “And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love Me, and guard My commandments.“
** Wow, is it that simple? Yes it is, if we love Yahuah, we guard His covenant and commandments and this is how we remove the generational curses!!
The first reference to how to remove generational curses is found in:
Vayiqra (Leviticus) 26:40-42 – “If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against Me, and that also they have walked contrary unto Me; And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity: Then will I remember My covenant with Ya’aqov, and also My covenant with Yitschaq, and also My covenant with Avraham will I remember; and I will remember the land.”
**Yahuah promises that if we confess our sins, the sins of our fathers, which trespassed His covenant, and if we humble ourselves and accept the punishment for our iniquity then Yahuah will remember the eternal covenant that He cut with our fathers of the faith, Avraham, Yitschaq and Ya’aqov and remove the curses from us.
The next verses we will look at is:
Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 14:20-21 – “We acknowledge, O Yahuah, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers: for we have sinned against Thee. Do not abhor us, for Thy name’s sake, do not disgrace the throne of Thy glory: remember, break not Thy covenant with us.”
**Once again we see that confession of our sins and our father’s sins is the key to Yahuah remembering His covenant and not continuing the curses upon us. Yahuah does this because of His name and the glory it brings Him to see His children return to Him in repentance, humility and most importantly, return to Him in love.
The last verses we are going to look at is found in Tehilliym where the psalmist call on Yahuah for His yeshu’ah (salvation):
Tehilliym (Psalms) 106:4-6 – “Remember me, O Yahuah, with the favour that Thou bearest unto Thy people: O visit me with Thy yeshu’ah; That I may see the good of Thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of Thy nation, that I may glory with Thine inheritance. We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.”
** The psalmist calls to Yahuah to remember him and then confesses the people’s sins and the sins of their fathers, so that they can have His salvation.
Now that everything should be clear on what generational curses are and how we can remove them, let’s pray to Father Yahuah to remove them!
A Prayer for the Removal of Generational Curses
The following is an outline of a prayer for the removal of generational curses:
Dear Heavenly Father Yahuah, my Master, my King, my Everything, my Elohiym.
The Elohiym of Avraham, the Elohiym of Yitschaq, the Elohiym of Ya’aqov, the Elohiym of the children of Yashar’el whom I have chosen to join myself to and try my best to guard covenant with You Father Yahuah, obey Your commandments and walk in the way with Your Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach.
I come Heavenly Father Yahuah, only through the mighty name and precious shed blood of Your Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach to say thank You for guiding me to pray this prayer and seek to remove the generational curses from my life.
I come Father Yahuah to bless, praise, worship, exalt, magnify and extol Your beautiful, set-apart and righteous name and to place You alone above everything in my life and to tell You that I love You Father Yahuah with everything You created me to be.
It is the sincere desire of my soul to walk in agreement with Your Word, to not transgress your commandments and.
I confess my sins and the sins of my fathers that we have sinned against You and seek forgiveness for them.
I realize that there may be evil ruachoth that are attached to me because of the sins of my ancestors and my sins, and I ask You to please remove them from me and to not let them have power or dominion over me.
Please continue to allow me to walk as close to Your Son Mashiach Yahusha so that He can use His rod to correct me from my sins against You and so He can use His staff to protect me from the evil ruachoth and remove the generational curses that have been passed down to me.
Father Yahuah I acknowledge my weakness and that I can do nothing without You and that is why I am coming to You right now to confess my sins, the sins of my fathers and to ask You that You please guide me to do Your will in my life.
In the name of Your Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach I pray this prayer, I bless, praise, worship and exalt Your beautiful set-apart and righteous name.
And in the mighty name of Your Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach I love You Father Yahuah with all of my heart, I love You Father Yahuah with all of my soul and in the mighty name of Your Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach I love You Father Yahuah with all of my might and with all of my strength I love You Father Yahuah! I love You Father Yahuah!
Amein, Amein.
Conclusion:
We all have generational curses that are upon us, those from A’dam and Chuah that cannot be removed, and those from our fathers which we can remove by confessing their sins along with our sins, repenting of them and by loving Father Yahuah the way He wants us to, by obeying Him and guarding covenant with Him.
We may not know the specific sins of our fathers, and our fathers that we know may have never worshipped other elohiym, but you can guarantee that somewhere in our not to distant past, one of them probably did. If at any time they put something above Yahuah in their lives, they brought generational curses upon their descendants, us.
I sincerely pray that this blog series is giving you insight on how to pray through the battles we encounter in our sojourn here. They are not intended to be verbatim prayers but rather to give you scriptural references on the battles we face so that Ruach Elohiym can guide you to pray with in depth scriptural knowledge of the battle with an outline to get you started.
Our walk is not a walk of religion but one of relationship, an intimate relationship with Father Yahuah and His Son Yahusha Ha’Mashiach, Who is the only One through Whom we can have access to Father Yahuah.
I pray that you have a wonderful fellowship with Ruach Yahuah on His feast day of the Shabbath tomorrow!
May Yahuah continue to bless you and your families with grace, peace, mercy and understanding of His Word.
Shalom,
Servant of Yahuah
Minister Morrow
