Understanding Yom Kippuriym
Yahuah’s Day of Atonement
Understanding Yom Kippuriym: Yahuah’s Day of Atonement
Introduction:
Yom Kippuriym, commonly known as the Day of Atonement, is a solemn and very set-apart appointed time in the Scriptures. It is the only Shabbath that is commanded to be kept for twenty four hours on two different days during the evening, night and the morning. It is also the biblical blueprint of what a day and Shabbath actual is.
The Origins and Significance of Making Atonement to Yahuah for Sin
From the first transgression of Yahuah’s commandments in the garden of Eden, atonement for sin had to be made and the only way for the atonement of sin is through the shedding of blood.
Throughout the scriptures atonement has had to be made for sin through the sacrifice of animals and the use of their blood by the priest to make atonement to Yahuah. Without atonement of our sins, we cannot have a relationship with Father Yahuah.
The Connection Between Yom Kippuriym and Yahusha Ha’Mashiach
Yom Kippuriym finds its ultimate fulfillment in Yahusha Ha’Mashiach as the High Priest that did not have to offer sacrifices for Himself, but offered Himself without spot or blemish to the atonement for our sins.
Guarding Yom Kippuriym
1. Mosheh is Commanded by Yahuah to Institute Yom Kippuriym for Yashar’el
Yahuah gives Mosheh specific instructions for when and how His Feast of Yom Kippuriym is to be kept.
- Vayiqra (Leviticus) 16: 29-31 – “And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you: For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before Yahuah. It shall be a Shabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever”
- Vayiqra (Leviticus) 23: 26-32 – “ And Yahuah spake unto Mosheh, saying, Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto Yahuahthe Lord. And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before Yahuah Elohaykem. For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people. And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people. Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your Shabbath.”
- Bemidbar (Numbers) 29: 7-11 – “And ye shall have on the tenth day of this seventh month an set-apart convocation; and ye shall afflict your souls: ye shall not do any work therein: But ye shall offer an ascending smoke offering unto Yahuah for a sweet savour; one young bullock, one ram, and seven lambs of the first year; they shall be unto you without blemish: And their oblation shall be of flour mingled with oil, three tenth deals to a bullock, and two tenth deals to one ram, A several tenth deal for one lamb, throughout the seven lambs: One kid of the goats for a sin offering; beside the sin offering of atonement, and the continual ascending smoke offering, and the oblation of it, and their drink offerings.”
2. How Yahusha Fulfills Yom Kippuriym
Yahusha’s past and present fulfillment of Yom Kippuriym for our atonement and forgiveness of sins.
- Romaiym (Romans) 3: 23-26 – “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of Elohiym; Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Mashiach Yahusha: Whom Elohiym hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of Elohiym; To declare, I say, at this time His righteousness: that He might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Yahusha.”
- Ivriym (Hebrews) 9: 11-14 – ” But Mashiach being come an High Priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood He entered in once into the set-apart place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Mashiach, who through the eternal Ruach offered Himself without spot to Elohiym, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living Elohiym?”
- Ivriym (Hebrews) 9: 24-26 – “For Mashiach is not entered into the set-apart places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of Elohiym for us: Nor yet that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest entereth into the set-apart place every year with blood of others; For then must He often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.”
Yahusha’s future fulfillment of Yom Kippuriym when sin shall be no more.
- Mattithyahu (Matthew) 13: 41-43 – “The Son of A’dam shall send forth His angels, and they shall gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.”
- Ivriym (Hebrews) 9:28 – ” So Mashiach was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”
- Chazon (Revelation) 20: 10-15 – “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before Elohiym; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.“
3. Observance of Yom Kippuriym for Today’s Believer
We are called to confess our sins to Yahusha, afflict our souls and blow the shofar during Yom Kippuriym.
- 1st Yochanon (John) 1: 9-10 – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.“
- Vayiqra (Leviticus) 23:29 – “ And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you:“
- Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) 58: 5-6 – “Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to Yahuah? Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?“
- Zakaryahu (Zechariah) 7:5 – “Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?“
- Vayiqra (Leviticus) 25:9 – “Then shalt thou cause the shofar of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the shofar sound throughout all your land.“
Thank Father Yahuah for delivering you from past sins that you used to commit. Try making a private list of the sins you have committed through your life and ask Father Yahuah for His forgiveness through the shed blood of His Son Mashiach Yahusha. If there are sins that you are having problems getting out of your life, ask Father Yahuah to help you to turn away (repent) from those sins so you can fully repent and ask for forgiveness.
Conclusion
Yom Kippuriym is a day to reflect on our past/current sins and to seek forgiveness through Mashiach Yahusha our High Priest who is/making intercession for us before Father Yahuah. It is a day to afflict our souls by fasting and relying totally on the Salvation of Yahuah through His Son Yahusha, the High Priest. We are to do no work of any kind and think about how we can eliminate further sin from invading our lives and get rid of the sin we already have.
May we continually seek to eliminate sin from our lives each and every day until that day we are free from sin forever!
